Bytes, Rhymes, Life #6: Cache Rules Everything Around Me
Hello everyone! Sorry for the delay in sending out the next edition of the newsletter. Since last time, a lot of things have happened. I’ve joined a new project at DigitalOcean, still in the Networking space. I went to Romania and New Jersey to talk about gRPC and Protocol Buffers. Additionally, I spent a little over a week in Berlin on vacation, which was quite relaxing. Anyways, here’s some stuff I’ve found interesting since last time.
Software
The GraphQL Stack
Recently, I’ve been dabbling with GraphQL in a few projects both in and outside of work. This blog post from the maintainers of Apollo is a good introduction to GraphQL and it’s future. Apollo is doing some exciting things and I’m excited for the future of it.
Simple React Patterns
It’s no secret that React is hyped up a lot these days. I enjoy coding with it a lot. That said, there’s a lot to learn in terms of thinking about your code in the “React” way. This article is a good introduction to those common patterns.
Building a Sneakerbot
It’s no secret that there’s money to be made in the sneaker reselling game. This blog post in from 2015, but still highlights how much needs to be done in order to actually create sneaker bots. It’s a good, insightful read.
Deploying an SPA as a Go Binary with Webpack and Statik
I write a lot of Go recently and I’m working on a project right now that deals with running multiple Go services. Rather than deploying the front-end separately to S3 or something, it is probably just easier to deploy it as a Go binary like everything else. So, I wrote a blog post on how to do so. Enjoy!
Music
Recently, I’ve come across some really amazing music that I think will be a treat for y’alls ears.
Laila’s Wisdom by Rapsody
I had this album on repeat for a good couple of weeks. From North Carolina, Rapsody delivers a heavy dose of lyricism, flow, backed with amazing production and features from artists such as 9th Wonder, Kendrick Lamar, and Common. My favorite track on this is A Rollercoaster Jam Called Love.
Alrite - Kaytranada
Like Janet Jackson? Kaytranada makes a really, really dope remix of Alright by Janet Jackson, backed with some smooth bossa nova samples. I can’t get enough of this track.
Nomalizo - Letta Mbulu
Lettta Mbulu is a South African jazz singer and I forgot how I stumbled on this track, but it’s quite groovy. Increase the speed of the YouTube video to 1.25x for a real treat.
Down by the River - Letta Mbulu
Another hit by Letta Mbulu, this was the track that may me realize how amazing her vocals are. I honestly think that if you are a fan artists like Sade, you will really enjoy listening to Letta Mbulu in this track.
That’s all I got for you all in this newsletter. I’ll be going to Nigeria in a few weeks, so I’m hoping to have a dope experience there to share with you all. As always, feel free to reach out to me on Twitter with any feedback, especially if you want to see a different direction for the newsletter. Thanks for reading!
