Issue 001 of Marginal Thoughts - a weekly newsletter from the blog of Ian Watkins

Greetings!

And welcome to Issue 001 of Marginal Thoughts - a weekly newsletter designed to showcase a weekly thought I’ve been meditating on, a digest of posts from the blog, and noteworthy content I’ve been consuming.

The Meditation

Anxiety often includes rumination on things that scare us. Philippians 4 says freedom is found in tackling this head on. By replacing rumination with meditation on things that are beautiful and true, we can find peace.

💡 What’s one such thing you can meditate on today?

The Blog

Sales Success is Boring - An exploration of what true success looks like.

The Joy of Field Notes - Mental clarity is hard to come by, but this iconic American brand has helped me achieve it.

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running - Book Review of an amazing memoir from a marathoner and novelist, Haruki Murakami.

Ready Player One - Book Review for an instant sci-fi classic by Ernest Cline.

What a Wonderful World - A short meditation on observing the world around us.

The Marginalia

David Perell - This podcast explores the art and craft of writing and storytelling with famous authors from around the world.

Meditations Book Club - If you’re looking for a way to read more, consider joining my friend, Matt, who is leading us through a 12 week read through of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.

What Your Therapist Won’t Tell You About Getting Your Mind Right - An excellent podcast episode from one of my longtime favorites, the Art of Manliness Podcast. Key Takeaway: Exercise may be more effective than therapy or medication for treating depression and anxiety.

Gratitude

I am so grateful that you’ve decided to join me in meditating on this thing we call life.

-Ian
