Much Like The French Guy Yesterday
Well, the time that wasn’t spent watching baseball anyways, but more on that later. This dog though:

So the teeth are described as ‘giant’ and while they look the part on the dog, it also looks like the dog is pretty small if that backpack is to scale and there aren’t any sort of Hobbit-related shenanigans going on here. One wonders how funny those teeth would be on a person, or if it would just look like you had kind of big teeth, rather than outrageously large ones. Regardless, the teeth did their job, though maybe not in the way they were expecting but wow did I cry-laugh at that dog.
Listen to This, then Maybe Watch This Too: The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden - available via Apple Music and probably other places
I goofed and missed the anniversary of this a couple weeks ago, but this album is essentially a full recording of the (at-the-time) final show for LCD Soundsystem, a band described as dance rock, or guitar music for people who like electronic music. While their swan song was originally scheduled as a single performance at Madison Square Garden, the date infamously sold out near instantly, causing the band to announce additional dates at a smaller venue nearby which would then culminate in this three-hour-plus farewell. While they also slightly infamously un-retired less than five years later, this, along with companion documentary SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS (available via Amazon Prime) showcase a band bowing out at the height of their powers, and frontman James Murphy as he processes the end of this creation of his.
So the baseball; I spent most of today watching old Greg Maddux games that the MLB Network was running in celebration of his birthday. Maddux, who is likely best-known for his dominant run with the Atlanta Braves but also spent a surprising amount of his career with the Chicago Cubs as well, was one of my favorites to watch back in the day. While he wasn’t known for overpowering speed, he had a ridiculous ability to place pitches which, combined with an obsessive knowledge of batter tendencies, allowed him to be one of the most ruthlessly efficient pitchers in memory. I then transitioned to reading this great profile on Maddux from Playboy (articles! Who knew?) If you’re inclined to, head here for a good helping of crazy Maddux facts and some standout games from his career.
No bit here, but this was a surprisingly compelling explanation of why Photoshop has the menu option to add 3D-rendered trees to pictures.
We really have to get some sort of educational standards alignment in Florida. I don’t know how I’m supposed to use this information anywhere, and then it gets into the HOLY GRAIL-type bits about which variation of gator to maintain consistency.
Today happens to be the 24th anniversary of the airdate of an all-timer episode of The Simpsons, “22 Short Films About Springfield,” and to celebrate, former executive producer/show-runner Josh Weinstein posted the teleplay for a segment that was cut from the episode, which sounds truly insane, and it’s a bummer they never produced and aired this.
Speaking of cartoons, there’s no link, but I’m disappointed at the number of people who helpfully sent me images of Pixar moms with just the biggest dumpers after yesterday’s news items. What are you doing.
Also from the What Are You Doing Department:
Please do not. We need to use that Watson supercomputer to imagine the kind of life you’d have to lead to end up in a point where you’re waiting for this movie to deliver some kind of definitive statement of this moment, though this made me remember that Charlie Sheen starred in a film about 9/11 so I guess everyone else is running for 2nd place after all.
Finally, this:
I’m here on Flavortown Island checkin’ out a joint run by local legend, Tom Nook! Unlike the homes around here, you won’t have to take out a loan to afford these dishes 😅One of the weird side-effects of aging has meant developing a genuine affinity for Guy Fieri, who seems like an all-around decent guy, volunteering in recent years to go out and set up kitchens to provide meals for first responders in situations like California wildfires and, really, his shows have always been about highlighting local small businesses and who doesn’t like that. While his aesthetic is one of those is-what-it-is things, I definitely appreciated being able to buy a literal fishbowl of booze from his Vegas restaurant along with those sidewinder fries, and now unironically liking him is one of the stranger developments of my adult life.
