This week we're looking at an early draft of Additions to the Five Journalistic “W”s, one of Luke’s rare topical(ish) pieces. After that, we’ve got a couple of recommendations of things we’ve been into lately: Two spy shows! One psychologically thrilling French espionage series from the 2010s and one obscure Cold War spy series from the late 70s that’ll have all you John Le Carré sickos out there going, “Yes… Ha ha ha… Yes!”
Behind the Scenes: Additions to the Five Journalistic “W”s
The idea behind this piece, which I started working on at the end of 2016, was pretty straightforward: Adjust and update the classic “5 ‘W’s” to reflect and satirize the terrible new environment in which journalists now had to operate. I felt that this was a nice, clear, specific concept for a premise, and I assumed that, as a result, it would be less difficult than average to take this piece from idea to final draft. How wrong I was!
