A Newsletter of Humorous Writing #9

A Newsletter of Humorous Writing

A Newsletter of Humorous Writing

For November 16-22, 2017, a roundup of the week's
finest prose humor and prose humor-related news.

Hello and welcome to a Newsletter of Humorous Writing, the email propaganda arm of the acclaimed humorous readings show, An Evening of Humorous Readings. What will you discuss at your Thanksgiving table this year? Politics and current events? What you're thankful for? We'll be discussing the best outlets for short prose humor. Our table is very droll.

What We Enjoyed This Week

Thanksgiving with David Caruso by Cara Michelle Smith (The Belladonna) Some premises are so simple and so perfect that they must become humor pieces. This is one of them.

My Linkedin Photo by Colin Nissan (The New Yorker)

Dante's Nine Circles of Hell Reimagined for Linguistic Transgressions by John Rauschenberg (McSweeney's) The Newsletter style guide is pro-serial comma. This will not be argued, discussed, or debated.

Caring for Your New Office Woman by Meg Favreau (The New Yorker)

An Old Favorite

The Sea is Dope by Chris Ryan (Grantland)
Not a traditional humor piece, per se, but this piece is so funny that it doesn't matter. Claiming absolute and objective certainty over that which requires neither is always, always amazing. (See what we did there?) The pacing of this piece is fantastic. It's so tight. It's like jazz. Chris Ryan is a consistently hilarious and sharp writer. His takes--be they hot, or thought out--are wonderful. This piece is the purest example of that. Also, RIP Grantland.

Updates From Your Hosts and Friends of the Show

James is out this week with a great piece that's perfect for both Thanksgiving, and anyone who has ever been on the internet.

Friend of the Newsletter Michael Gerber's American Bystander is kickstarting its 6th issue. It's going to feature some incredible pieces, many of which were written by Evening of Humorous Readings alums. We can't recommend these magazines enough.
