A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
For November 22-28, 2018, a roundup of the week's finest prose humor and prose humor-related news.
Hello and welcome to A Newsletter of Humorous Writing, the email propaganda arm of the acclaimed humorous readings show, An Evening of Humorous Readings. We're still feeling sluggish and bloated from Thanksgiving, and have been torporously shuffling around Humorous Readings HQ (HRHQ) in our monogrammed bathrobes all week, but now we're ready to get back in the saddle and bring you the finest humor writi--oof, hold on a second, we were typing too quick. Gonna have to lie down for a little bit. You just go on ahead without us. Oof.
What We Enjoyed This Week
An Artist Takes Her Alumni Career Survey by Claire Friedman (McSweeney's)
An Oral History of Isaac Newton “Discovering” Gravity, as Told by His Contemporaries by Jeremiah Budin (The New Yorker)
Lunch, Explained by Alison Leiby (Eater)
Creeping Through My Home Town (for Research!) by Emily Flake (The New Yorker)
The Complete Guide to Taking a Shit In Red Dead Redemption 2 by Ben Godar (McSweeney's)
An Old Favorite
Two Bugs on Display at the Montreal Insectarium, the First of Which I Thought Very Impressive Until I Saw the Second by Dan Guterman (McSweeney's)
This is a great illustration of how meticulous attention to framing and phrasing gives you a big payoff, even (especially?) in a very short piece.Updates From Your Hosts and Friends of the Show
Brian is returning to the Punderdome on December 4th at 8PM at Littlefield in Brooklyn. Go check out the show, which is always a blast, and cheer Brian on while you're at it.
Luke is performing in the show "Monologues & Madness" on Monday, December 3rd at Cornelia Street Cafe (29 Cornelia St) from 6PM to 8PM. Other monologuists include Friends of the Show River Clegg and Steve Young, so it should be a fun time.
And speaking of Friend of the Show Steve Young, the documentary Bathtubs Over Broadway, about Steve's obsession with industrial musicals, just got a great write up in The New Yorker by the notoriously difficult-to-please critic Richard Brody. Read the article and then go see the movie.
News About The Next Show
We'll be announcing the date for our next show soon, so keep an eye on this space for updates! Hopefully we'll stop having the meat sweats so bad by the time the show rolls around. Oof.
