A Newsletter of Humorous Writing #35
A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
For May 17-23, 2018, a roundup of the week's finest prose humor and prose humor-related news.
Hello and welcome to A Newsletter of Humorous Writing, the email propaganda arm of the acclaimed humorous readings show, An Evening of Humorous Readings. This week, we're excited to announce that we're almost done with our screenplay. It's about a terrifying planet ruled by newsletters. On this planet, newsletters email humans, and violently embed links in humans, and unsubscribe from humans, and it's up to one intrepid astronaut from Earth to fight back. It's called Planet Newsletterworld, and we haven't quite figured out how to end it, but we're sure we'll come up with something.
What We Enjoyed This Week
Six Things I Say to Distract the Doormen of Buildings I Want to Pee In by Amy Schatz (McSweeney's)
Things Republicans Have Blamed for School Shootings or a Top-200 Subreddit? by Stephanie McMaster (McSweeney's)
Encouragement for Struggling Creatives by Riane Konc (The New Yorker)
An Old Favorite
This week's old favorites come from Eva Victor, an in-house writer at Reductress and an actor with the Story Pirates. She can be seen hosting Haha Wow! at UCB Hell's Kitchen, speaking words on The Reductress Minute podcast, and eating very toasted everything bagels!
The Only Times When It’s O.K. to Enter a Subway Car Before People Exit by Karen Chee (The New Yorker)
"This piece by Karen Chee is the best because these are actually the only times when it's ok to enter a subway, and also because any John Hamm content is my kind of content. Karen Chee rules! "
How to Wrap Your Pussy in Foil and Put It In The Fridge Since No One’s Eating It by Jasmine Pierce (Reductress)
"One of my fav Reductress pieces by Jasmine Pierce. Wow, what a visual that I absolutely adore!"
Updates From Your Hosts and Friends of the Show
Luke directed a sketch show from the team "Friends With Names" that's going up tonight (5/24) at 7:30PM at the PIT. And this weekend Luke and his sketch team "A Few Sandwich Lovers" are going to be in Austin for Austin Sketch Fest. If you're in Austin and like sketch comedy, come check out their show on Saturday night!
On Monday, Brian is going to be performing on the Quitters 1st Year Anniversary Show. Why not treat yourself to a long weekend of comedy?
Other Humorous Writing News
McSweeney's has reached their second Patreon goal, which means they're gonna start paying contributors, which means there's never been a better time to send some pieces their way. Cha-ching, baby!
News About The Next Show Party
A Party of Humorous Readings is just around the corner! If you’re a humorous writer, or a consumer of humorous writing, join your hosts Brian, Luke, and James for a good ol’ fashioned hangout at Peculier Pub (145 Bleecker St) on Thursday, May 31st, at 7pm. Everyone is welcome! Keep an eye on this space for updates!
