A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
For November 15-21, 2023
Hello and welcome to A Newsletter of Humorous Writing, a roundup of the week's finest short humor pieces and funny articles, and a celebration of the fantastic writers who wrote them. Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you're having a wonderful day and are getting to spend time with friends, family, and loved ones. We're very thankful for you, our readers, and all your support over the years.
What We Enjoyed This Week
In Defense of Drinking Gravy by Kathryn Baecht (Points in Case) A delightfully wacky premise. The piece starts from a very heightened place ("pound back six or seven glasses of gravy") but Kathryn manages to find ways to heighten even more with fun reveals about the narrator's family and the details of their gravy-related traditions.Nutritious Additions to Our Elementary School Lunch Menu That Are Definitely Not Just More Pizza by Nick Morgan and Tom Ellison (McSweeney's) You know it's a good list piece when you start pulling some exemplary entries to quote and realize you're basically copying the entire thing. It's nearly impossible to narrow it down to just one or two favorites, but that being said: "Reppeponi Zippa."
“Younger Looking Eyes” by Amy Greenlee (Slackjaw) We really like the rhythms of the prose and the use of repetition in this piece. The repetition really drives home and reinforces the central thing the piece is exploring: How weird the phrase "younger looking eyes" is, when you stop to think about it.

Writers Write About Their Own Writing
I've been obsessed with music countdowns since high school, and I'd wanted to write a humorous version of one for a long time. A bunch of them are formatted as "Number of Pop Culture Things to Hear Before You Die," so I figured tacking the word "Tomorrow" to the end of that phrase would be a funny and simple way to make the list less about the albums and more about the reader's impending doom. Although, yes, I still spent way too much time trying to decide what albums to include. Forever Changes by Love rocks.
