A Newsletter of Humorous Writing #3
A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
For October 5-11, 2017, a roundup of the week's
finest prose humor and prose humor-related news.
Hello and welcome to a Newsletter of Humorous Writings, the email propaganda arm of the acclaimed humorous readings show, An Evening of Humorous Readings. They say the third time is a charm. So, dear readers, consider yourselves charmed.
What We Enjoyed This Week
The Craziest Lost Sitcom Episodes of All Time by Jonathan Zeller (The New Yorker)
The Rock Test: A Hack for Men Who Don't Want to be Accused of Sexual Harassment by Anne Victoria Clark (Medium)
Reasons Your City is the Greatest City in the Known Universe by Rebecca Turkewitz (The New Yorker)
Great Moments in Thoughts and Prayers by Laura Galaviz and Michael Gerber (The American Bystander) When the news is terrible, it's tough to find a way to be respectful, funny, and make a strong argument. Laura and Michael do a fantastic job threading the needle.
An Old Favorite
Seth is a wildly talented humor writer, and this piece is a perfect example of why. It takes a simple premise and heightens to a truly insane level--but stays grounded because the character, and rules of this world, are totally clear. What's more, we've all read a memo that feels like this, even if this particular memo gets really bonkers, really quickly.
Updates From Your Hosts and Friends of the Show
James wrote about how Nobel Prize research feels familiar for Cafe.com. Otherwise, we're hard at work, in our secret, underground humor laboratory, mixing together the finest jokes, quips, and cultural references to create the perfect humor piece. Will this piece eventually become sentient, and overwhelm its creator? Probably not. But also, almost certainly.
News About The Next Show
Our next show will be October 16th at 8PM at HiFi Bar (169 Ave. A)! This month will feature readings from Eva Victor (Reductress, iO), and friends of the show Graham Starr (WIRED, The Atlantic) and Evan Waite (The President Show, The Onion, The New Yorker). For more information, check out our website.
Also, Brian will be out of town, and will have to miss this go-around. So, please, don't spoil anything for him. He's DVRing it.
