A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
For December 28-January 3, 2017/18 , a roundup of the week's
finest prose humor and prose humor-related news.
Hello and welcome to a Newsletter of Humorous Writing, the email propaganda arm of the acclaimed humorous readings show, An Evening of Humorous Readings. It's the new year, and that means new humor pieces. Yes, every week means new humor pieces, but that's just semantics.
What We Enjoyed This Week
I Can't Believe That This Beloved Neighborhood Cafe I Never Went To Is Shutting Down by Eddie Small (McSweeney's) We were all big fans of this piece, mainly because it does a great job of identifying--and building on--a feeling that we have all had (namely, a feeling of not doing a good enough job patronizing local businesses).
Popular Fairy Tales Updated for 2018 by Caitlin Kunkel (Belladonna) Rock solid premise by a rock solid writer--and fellow newsletter-creator.
Retirement Planning vs. Quest for the Amulet of Nargoth: Which is Right for Me? by Tim Sniffen (New Yorker) This piece does a great job bouncing back and forth between normal and crazy, and sticking the landing each time.
An Old Favorite
Extremely Loud Doorbells by Jack Handey (New Yorker)
Jack Handey is a goddamn genius--this, we all know. For most people, that genius generally takes the form of "Deep Thoughts" from SNL. Of course, Deep Thoughts is incredible, but the humor is quick and short. It was Twitter before there was Twitter. Can Jack Handey do more than 280 characters? We of little faith...Jack Handey is a jack of all trades (thank you, thank you. I'll see myself out.) He can do humor pieces, and even comic novels, with the best of them. There were so many examples to choose from. This is a personal favorite, but honestly, you can't go wrong.
Updates From Your Hosts and Friends of the Show
Quiet break on our end--nothing new from us.
