A Newsletter of Humorous Writing
For December 21-27, 2017, a roundup of the week's
finest prose humor and prose humor-related news.
Hello and welcome to a Newsletter of Humorous Writing, the email propaganda arm of the acclaimed humorous readings show, An Evening of Humorous Readings. Heard about any good New Year's Eve parties? If you send an invite our way, we can bring enough short humor pieces for everyone, plus Brian knows how to do that thing where you open up a bottle of champagne with a sword. Think about it!
What We Enjoyed This Week
4 Ways to Throw a Dinner Party for 1 by Megan Downey (The Belladonna)
Studio Notes on the Nativity Story by Susanna Wolff (The New Yorker)
Why “A Muppet Family Christmas” Is the “Avengers: Infinity War” of Holiday Movies by Bizzy Coy (Medium)
An Old Favorite
We've got one last Christmas-related piece for you ('til next year), and while it may be longer than the stuff we usually highlight, keep in mind that it's much much shorter than your average Trollope novel. Comical misunderstandings ensue when a woman attempts to procure a bit of mustard for her sick husband. It's all very charming and extremely 19th-Century British novel-y. Classic Trollope!
Updates From Your Hosts and Friends of the Show
Luke has a piece in issue #6 of The American Bystander, just out this past week! (It also features work from Friends of the Show Lucas Adams and River Clegg.) And Splitsider mentioned Paul Ryan (the magazine) in its round up of the best humor books of 2017. Aside from that, we've been too darn busy getting ready for all the sweet parties we know we're gonna get invited to.
News About The Next Show
You know the old saying: A new year always brings a new space for your comedy show that specifically focuses on readings of short prose humor pieces. Keep an eye on this space for updates!
Did we miss a piece you loved? Did you love a piece we mentioned? Let us know! This is an experiment and we're hoping to continue to make it better and better. If you have any thoughts, notes, wishes, or dreams for this newsletter, please respond to us or this email and tell us what the score is.
