Announcement: The Drop In Has a New Home

I moved The Drop-In.

Not the writing. Not the name, not the mission, not the voice you signed up for. Just the house it lives in. Starting now, The Drop-In reaches you from Human Traits Studio. I also moved newsletter platforms from Beehiiv over to Buttondown.

Here is the short version of why. For a while now, The Drop-In and just about everything else I make have been drifting toward the same center of gravity. One question, really: what we keep of ourselves as the machines get better at being us. That question finally has a name and a place to live. Human Traits Studio. The novel, the essays, the Memoir I have started writing in the open, the cohorts where people put the ideas to work. The Drop-In was always part of that. It just was not standing under the same roof. Now it is.

Two things stay separate. Human Traits Studio is the work. Puhala.com is me. They share DNA of course, but most of what I send out to the world from here on will come from the Studio, and the personal odds and ends that sit outside its questions will stay over at puhala.com.

What changes for you is almost nothing. Same name, same rhythm, same person typing week to week. A few practical notes, though. This now arrives from a new address, and it wears a quieter look, closer to paper. If it landed somewhere other than your inbox, drag it back, or just reply and say hello. That teaches your mail that we are still on speaking terms.

As for what the new charter means: The Drop-In stays exactly what it has been, the weekly musing. But it now sits beside the rest of the work, which you are welcome to wander into any time. The canon, which is Human Traits and now Memoir of a Machine, going out a chapter at a time. The shorter Field Notes. And the Practice, where the thinking gets its hands dirty.

One more thing is coming, and I will keep it to a sentence because it is not ready yet. There will be a companion to this called Marginalia, for the Studio's deeper cuts, the Field Notes and the Memoir chapters as they land. Nobody gets moved onto it without asking. When it is ready I will open the door, and you can decide whether to walk through. This, The Drop-In, is not going anywhere.

Same name. Same mission. A better house. Thank you for being here, and for following it home. It means more than this note lets on.

More soon,
Michael
