Hollywood Hotline - Week of September 12, 2024
HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Howdy Hotliners!
Sorry I missed last Thursday’s (9/5/24) newsletter! I was crewing on a commercial shoot in 116° weather way out in the deep north Valley. Luckily, I didn’t die and was able to spend my downtime bookmarking some Hollywood stories here and there, which I have combined with this week’s stories so far.
Top Story: The Dying Art of Filmmaking Indeed
Judd Apatow and Steven Spielberg are making a Coke vs. Pepsi movie. If anyone needs me I’ll be lying in the bathtub fully clothed with the shower blasting water on face as hot as I can make it.
Without further ado, let’s check the Hotline:
Cola Wars Not Your Thing? What about a Second Remake of a Beloved Classic?
Even the remake was a classic. Michael B. Jordan (CREED 2015) is remaking THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968, 1999).
I will throw this IP legacy remake a full Two Bones if they announce that they are bringing back BOTH Faye Dunaway as ‘Vicki Anderson’ and Rene Russo as ‘Catherine Banning’ where they team up with the New Girl.
Classic Remakes Not Your Thing? What about Musician Biopics for Boomers?
Shailene Woodley (THE DESCENDANTS 2011) is playing legendary screamer/screecher singer, Janis Joplin (1943-1970) who is a member of the Forever 27 Club.
Heroin is a Devil Train straight to the Big Adios. Don’t ever get your ticket punched! Not even once!
Musician Biopics Not Your Thing? What about Gritty Crime Drama Starring Sexy Studs?
Tom Hardy vs. Aaorn Taylor-Johnson in a 1970s Oslo crime drama adapted by Jo Nesbo, based on his 2016 book BLOOD ON SNOW.
What’s interesting is that Cary Fukunaga is directing, who I thought got canceled? WME and Range Media Partners are shopping the film at Toronto Film Festival as we speak, so will be curious to see who picks this up for distribution, if at all.
THE ‘BURBS (1989) Rebooted as Peacock Series
One of my favorite late-night stoner movies to pass out to! Keke Palmer (NOPE 2022) starring in this, which is going to be shot at the same Universal Studios backlot as the original! Wisteria Lane, hurrah! Brian Grazer (SPLASH 1984) and Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY 1999-) are producing.
The IP Wars continue to grind out creative casualties. Will give this one full Bone if they cast Corey Feldman as the “Pizza Dude!”
Will we finally find out? Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen to play parents John & Patsy Ramsey for new JonBenét Ramsey limited series At Paramount+.
We all know it was an #insidejob
New AppleTV+ Series NOT by Stephen King
“WIDOW’S BAY is set on a mysteriously cursed New England island and follows its superstitious citizens, led by a mayor who refuses to believe their warnings.”
So basically, the premise is: What if mayor from JAWS is mayor in Stephen King’s Castle Rock? It’s being produced by Kate Dippold (PARKS & REC 2009-2015) & Hiro Murai (ATLANTA 2016-2022), and will be a horror-comedy. Sounds funny?
New Netflix Series NOT by Stephen King Either!
“In a seemingly picturesque retirement community, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have. . .time.”
From Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE 2019), and The Duffer Brothers (STRANGER THINGS 2016-2025).
Starring: Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman.
So basically, the premise is: What if COCOON (1985) but by Stephen King?” Sounds unfunny?
