Hollywood Hotline - Week of October 24, 2024
HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Howdy Hotliners!
Sorry I missed the past two Thursday’s (10/17/24 + 10/10/24) newsletters! I was working on an AppleTV+ comedy series and then on another commercial shoot (plus doing some substitute teaching(!). While I was out in the field, I was still able to bookmark some Hollywood press releases here and there, which I have combined with this week’s stories thus far.
TOP STORY:
Christopher Nolan Making Next Film with Matt Damon and Tom Holland
Read some rumors that it’s either A. THE PRISONER (1967-1968) TV show feature franchise adaptation, B. BLUE THUNDER (1983) future police helicopter remake, C. TENET (2020) prequel/sequel/spin-off. D. All of the Above
I choose D. Universal releasing in the summer of 2026.
Without further ado, let’s check the Hotline:
FUTURE FILMS:
Tom Cruise Starring in A Film By Alejandro G. Inarritu
“Due to start shooting in the U.K. Plot details kept under wraps.” I’m guessing something period, cold, dark, bleak, sad, waa waa. You just know there’s gonna be a stunner of a oner following Cruise execute some gnarly period stunt. Would be baller if it were a BIRDMAN (2014) like film but about a man searching for his boss’ missing wife.
Boots Riley is Back, Baby with I LOVE BOOSTERS
From the awesome auteur of SORRY TO BOTHER YOU (2018) comes a new tale centering on “A ring of enterprising boosters (aka shoplifters, equal opportunists) who take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven. Additional plot details are under wraps.” Sounds like it could be a surreal whacky crime comedy.
CALL ME BY YOUR AMERICAN PSYCHO NAME
Luca Gaudagnino (CHALLENGERS 2024) is rebooting the original 2000 film AMERICAN PSYCHO, which is a masterpiece. Would be baller if he cast Christian Bale to reprise his role. They could de-age him and everything. But something tells me ‘Patrick Bateman’ will be played by Timmy Boy Chals (or one of the bros from CHALLENGERS 2024 ;)
CLUELESS Star in POOR THINGS Director Alien Conspiracy Film
Alicia Silverstone is starring along with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemmons in BUGONIA, which is about “two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from Emmy winner Will Tracy (SUCCESSION 2018-2023, THE MENU 2022), based on the South Korean comedy SAVE THE GREEN PLANET (2003). Details of Silverstone’s role are being kept under wraps.” Also being co-produced by Ari Aster (BEAU IS AFRAID 2023). Director Yorgos just cranking shit out. Fuck the preciousness of 10 films or whatever the hell Tarantino’s pining on about! I still need to see his last one, can’t even remember the title.
Robert Pattinson To Catch a Predator a la DATELINE in Feature Film PRIMETIME
“While not much is known about the film’s genre or plot, it’s said to follow a journalist who takes on an underworld of crime and changes television forever. We’ve heard from multiple sources that the project takes inspiration from To Catch a Predator, the NBC program put on as part of Dateline, as well as its host Chris Hansen, though the studio wouldn’t confirm.” Documentary filmmaker, Lance Oppenheim (SOME KIND OF HEAVEN 2020) is making his fiction feature debut? A24 and Pattinson producing. Sounds pretty ick. Could you imagine taking a date to see this opening night at The Grove? “Two for PRIMETIME, please!”
Actor Coleman Domingo Making Feature Directorial Debut on Sammy Davis Jr. Affair SCANDALOUS
“The Miramax drama is about the clandestine love affair between film star Kim Novak and singer/dancer and film star Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957. Sydney Sweeney (EUPHORIA 2019- will play Novak, and David Jonsson (INDUSTRY 2020-2022) will play Davis.” Sounds plus-y, but I’m down.
Forget LADY IN THE WATER, Now There’s THE GIRL IN THE LAKE
“Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber have acquired The Girl in the Lake, a proposal for an adult mystery thriller novel by New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver. Oliver will write the script for a film that will be developed for United Artists. Scarlett Johansson is eyeing this to star as the title character. The logline is being kept under wraps but when Verve held the auction, the novel was being described as WHAT LIES BENEATH (2000) meets THE SIXTH SENSE 1999.” They should hire Shyamalan to direct! Not kidding!
Kevin Costner Dances With Surfing Headhunters
“Costner will play a washed-up American expat with a mysterious past who winds up living in Bali, Indonesia. He gathers a group of surfers led by a local photographer to find the perfect wave at an uncharted island — which winds up being the domicile of an ancient tribe of headhunters who are protecting their land at all costs.” Sign me up for this expedition padre loco!
TRENDY TV:
Stephen King’s CARRIE Will Reek Vengeance For Whole New Prom Night
DOCTOR SLEEP (2019) mad scientist director, Mike Flanagan will do it right I swear! From Amazon Prime: “The series logline describes it as a “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.” Got to cast someone diverse in title role I reckon otherwise it’s going to Julia Garner (OZARK 2017-2022).
John Steinbeck’s EAST OF EDEN Limited Series Rounds Out Cast
“Netflix has rounded out the main cast of its [7 episodes] limited series East of Eden, starring and executive produced by Florence Pugh and written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan. Tracy Letts (Saturday Night, Winning Time), Martha Plimpton (The Regime, Mass), Ciarán Hinds (Belfast, Game of Thrones), Joseph Zada (We Were Liars, Invisible Boys) and Joe Anders (Bonus Track, I Am Ruth) have boarded the project, joining previously cast Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist and Hoon Lee.” Be curious to see a modern adaptation.
“With the most powerful clients in Europe, Guy Ritchie’s THE ASSOCIATE will see family fortunes and reputations at risk, odd alliances unfold, and betrayal around every corner; and while the family might be London’s most elite fixers today, the nature of their business means there is no guarantee what’s in store tomorrow. The one-hour drama from Showtime/MTV Studios and 101 Studios follows two generations of gangsters, the businesses they run, the complex relationships they weave, and the man they call upon to fix their problems. Hardy is up for the role of Harry, the fixer, a man who is as dangerous as he is handsome. Mirren and Brosnan would star as the crime family’s matriarch and patriarch, respectively, we hear.” Paramount+, natch ;)
TANGY THEATER:
Gary Oldman in Samuel Becket’s KRAPP’S LAST TAPE
Will premiere at the York Theatre Royal next spring 2025, which will be an official homecoming for stage actor Gary Oldman. “His performances on stage include the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and the London production of Cabaret. His last theater appearance was nearly four decades ago, in 1987 with London Royal Court’s Serious Money. Irish playwright and Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett, who died in 1989, has long been considered one of the most creative literary minds of his age. Krapp’s Last Tape follows a man who, each year on his birthday, records a new tape reflecting on the year gone by. On his 69th birthday, Krapp, now a lonely man, is ready with a bottle of wine, a banana and his tape recorder.” The late great John Hurt (1940-2017) performed in this play twice. Here’s a YouTube link of one version: And a 2011 NY Times review of his performance in another version:
Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner They Put Her on Broadway
“Dirty Dancing: The Musical” will launch in late 2025 with aspirations for Broadway as well as a North American run. From there, producers plan to expand the show to theater markets in Asia, Australia, Latin America and beyond. Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the film’s screenplay, is developing the show and writing the book of the musical. Lonny Price, who played Neil Kellerman in “Dirty Dancing,” will direct the re-envisioned production. He’s a Tony nominee for “A Class Act” and “110 in the Shade” and originated the role of Charley Kringas in the ill-fated 1981 run of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along.” My only regret is Patrick Swayze (1952-2009) is not alive to dance in it in the role that Jerry Orbach (1935-2004) played in the film.
