Hollywood Hotline - Week of November 14, 2024
HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Howdy Hotliners,
Sir Ridely Scott has got GLADIATOR II (2024) coming out next week but has already announced that he’s working with GLADIATOR II star Paul Mescal again on:
TOP STORY:
“The project, based on the Peter Heller 2012 Apocalyptic thriller that Mark L Smith is adapting, is set in a near future where an unnamed pandemic has decimated American society. However, a civilian pilot lives a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a tough ex-marine, according to a synopsis from the producers. The two men, though mismatched, depend on each other to fend off roaming invaders. And when a random transmission beams through the radio of the pilot’s 1956 Cessna, the hope of a better life opens up and the pilot follows its static-broken trail.” So MAD MAX (1979) but with a plane instead of interceptor? Or THE ROAD (2009) but the kid is a tough ex-marine. Sounds cheery and timely.
Without further ado, let’s check the Hotline:
FUTURE FILMS:
Ben Stiller and Colin Farrell to Wrassle in the Belly of the Beast
“Adapted from Jerome Loving’s nonfiction book, Jack and Norman, about the friendship between literary titan Norman Mailer (Stiller) and long-time convict Jack Henry Abbott (Farrell). The pair connected in the late 1977s while Abbott was in jail, with Mailer helping the convicted bank robber, forger, and killer to write his memoirs and then lobbying for him to be released from jail. In the film, bolstered by Mailer’s mentorship, Abbott is paroled after nearly a decade in prison and gains instant popularity among the literary elite but struggles with life on the outside. When Mailer, creatively frustrated and envious of Jack’s rising star, turns his back on his infamous apprentice, Jack spirals—committing an unforgivable act of violence in a New York City diner only six weeks after his release.” I read a draft of this way back in the day for another actor. Pretty heady stuff. Like CAPOTE (2005) meets STRAIGHT TIME (1978).
Anthony Hopkins, Benedict Cumberbatch & Rosamund Pike to also Wrassle in the belly of WIFE & DOG
Guy Ritchie (SNATCH 2000) writes and directs. “Plot details are being kept under wraps on the movie, but it’s described as a “return to the colorful, back-stabbing world of the British aristocracy Richie explored in The Gentlemen film and TV series.” With the exception of LOCK STOCK, I have no interest in Guy Ritchie.
“TERRIFIER (2016, 2022, 2024) franchise backer Cineverse is lining up another Christmas treat for genre fans in the shape of a reimagining of cult horror SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT (1984) we can reveal. The original “tells the story of a child who is traumatized after seeing his parents killed by a man dressed as Santa Claus. Years later, he dons a Santa suit himself and gets bloody revenge.” Sounds gnarly. Haven’t seen any of the TERRIFIER movies. Not my neighborhood.
ATLANTA TV Director Hiro Murai to Make Directorial Debut in BUSHIDO
I love director Hiro’s ATLANTA (2016-2022) work. Can’t wait to see him make an action movie set in feudal Japan. One of my favorite films is HARAKIRI (1962), which I bet was inspiration for this project.
TRENDY TV:
Leonardo DiCaprio Taking a Trip Behind the Creator of the Twilight Zone
Love Rod Serling. Can’t wait to see a documentary about him.
Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, and Michelle Pfeiffer in MARGO’S GOT MONEY TROUBLES
“Apple TV+ series based on Rufi Thorpe’s novel. The eight-part series, set in the world of OnlyFans with a wrestling twist, hails from David E. Kelley and A24, with Fanning and Kidman also executive producing.” Sounds hot.
