Hollywood Hotline - Week of May 23, 2024
HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Howdy Hollyweridos,
Sorry I missed last Thursday’s (5/16/24) newsletter! I was out of town for a family gathering and didn’t have my laptop with me. I did bookmark some Hollywood stories here and there before I left town, and have combined them with this week’s stories so far.
Without further ado, let’s dive right in:
Director Cary Fukunaga is doing a period heist drama with Tom Hardy and Mahershala Ali. Thought Fukunaga was canceled? Guess not. Written by Frank John Hughes who is or isn’t the son of John Hughes? (Isn’t. I just checked ;)
An old Steve McQueen (the late actor) idea about a treasure hunt is finally getting made with the help of his estate for Netflix. Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey producing.
Director Henry Dunham’s follow-up to THE STANDOFF AT SPARROW CREEK (2018) is finally getting made and it sounds killer. It’s about a WWII Nazi hunting a wounded Army soldier. I can see this having no dialogue.
Out of Cannes is GAZER, which sounds fascinating. “Set in New Jersey and starring Ariella Mastroianni, [it] is the story of a young mother with a rare degenerative brain condition called dyschronometria. The disease causes her to struggle to perceive time, which makes holding down a steady job nearly impossible. So, when a mysterious woman offers her a risky job, she takes it, unaware of the dark consequences of her decision.”
Kathryn Bigelow sounds like she’s following in the footsteps of THE BEEKEEPER (2024) and CIVIL WAR (2024) in making her own White House is the setting for the climax of my movie, movie. Good to see her back in the saddle, finally.
Adam Sandler returning to the well for another drink with HAPPY GILMORE II. You just know they’re going to bring back a Force Ghost digi Carl Weathers a la Harold Ramis!!! MARK MY WORDS.
Donnie Yen taking over the JOHN WICK franchise? Yes, please.
A24 getting into the Ruben Östlund business. (They’re releasing his next film). He’s got quite the starry cast. Well, Keanu Reeves and Kirsten Dunst at least. Definitely going to reserve a ticket for this flight.
Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun star in LOVE ME, which sounds like an odd post-modern romantic comedy about “a buoy and a satellite [that] meet online long after humanity’s extinction. As they learn what life was like on Earth, they discover who they are and what it means to be alive and in love. Blending live-action and animation, the film is produced by ShivHans Pictures, 2AM and AgX. Kevin Rowe, Luca Borghese, Ben Howe, Shivani Rawat and Julie Goldstein served as producers, with Daniel Bekerman, Christine D’Souza Gelb and Connor Flanagan as executive producers. Written and directed by Sam & Andy Zuchero, in their feature debut, the film is slated for a nationwide theatrical release in early 2025.”
Luca Guadagnino directs for Amazon MGM Studios. Starring Andrew Garfield and Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri. "Written by Nora Garrett, the film is an intense dramatic thriller about a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil levels an accusation against one of her colleagues, and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light.”
Edgar Wright in talks to direct Sydney dead-eyed Sweeney in what I’m sure will be an illustrious remake.
I was one of few to see French female Tony Scott, Coralie Fargeat first film REVENGE theatrically (Sunset 5!) back in 2018, where I gave it 3 ½ out of 4 Bones it was that good! Of course her follow-up film just premiered at Cannes to a [checks notes]: 13-minute standing ovation. Put this one at the top of my list for 2024 viewing.
Coming Soon:
The Safdie Brothers got another docu-series dropping on HBO.
