Hollywood Hotline - Week of March 14, 2025
HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Howdy Hotliners,
It’s currently raining here in Los Angeles, which makes me want to watch rainy day films like THE GOONIES (1985) or JURASSIC PARK (1993). It enhances your viewing experience like 4DX at home. Reminds me of the time I was watching JAWS (1975) one night, alone in my apartment, and just as the shark was trying to break through the hull of ‘Quint’s’ boat, as they were singing “Show Me The Way To Go Home”, the Ridgecrest Earthquake struck, RATTLING my shelves and picture frames harsh enough for some of them to topple down or fall over. It was INTENSE.
TOP STORY:
Jenna Ortega is Gonna Be Taylor Russell’s Killer New Roommate in SINGLE WHITE FEMALE (1992) Remake
No director attached. Not even sure if Jenna Ortega is playing the psycho part but I would think so? In any event, they better have as good of a location as the OG NYC Astonia Building!
Without further ado, let’s check the Hotline:
FUTURE FILMS:
In Addition to SINGLE WHITE FEMALE Remake, Sony also Remaking STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997)
Neill Blomkamp (DISTRICT 9 2009, CHAPPIE 2015) directing. Sounds like a match made in bug zapping heaven. Paul Verhoeven’s original is a late night stoner classic. Wonder what he’s up to?
Glen Powell Gonna Live Forever With Barry Jenkins in Sci-Fi Thriller
“Details are being kept under wraps, but the pitch has been billed as an elevated sci-fi thriller revolving around the pursuit of eternal life. [Barry] Jenkins and [Matt] Aldrich will be adapting from Aldrich’s unpublished manuscript.”
Barry Jenkins never looked back after winning Best Picture Oscar for MOONLIGHT (2016). Just A-List Studio Level Craft Service from here on out. I wish I could be down with his version of BLADE RUNNER (1982) but not a fan of Glen Powell as he gives me Patrick Bateman vibes.
Ellen Burstyn & Taika Waititi Are Going on Their Own Little Mr. and Mrs. Sunshine Roadtrip
“Oscar winners Ellen Burstyn and Taika Waititi are set to star in Kornél Mundruczó’s feature drama PLACE TO BE. Written by Kornél Mundruczó’s frequent collaborator Kata Wéber, PLACE TO BE follows the unlikely friendship of an elderly woman (Burstyn) and middle-aged man (Waititi) as they travel from Chicago to New York to return a lost racing pigeon home. The feature will shoot this month at Disney Studios Australia in Sydney.”
I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict that Ellen Burtyn’s character, 92-years old at the time of filming, dies at the end a la MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969). Not a dry eye in the house. Seal my prediction in an envelope and open it after you finish watching the film! She then wins an Oscar posthumously.
What balls on this fuckin’ guy. Fuck him and the Rolls Royce he was chauffeured in on.
Portishead Band Member Made First Feature Film
I love Portishead. I love whatever this is about. What is it about?
“The thriller, which stars Marc Bessant and Jason Williamson and is the directorial debut of filmmaker John Minton, is set against the backdrop of the 1990s rave culture where two men –one a thief and one a poacher– must use their wits to survive.”
Like I said: I love everything about this (especially since my feature film debut script was about two dudes running from a third dude trying to kill them in the redwood forest of Santa Cruz mountains ;)
TRENDY TV:
Director Tim Burton Getting the Genius Treatment in Biopic Doc
Tim Burton’s legendary film run from 1984-1994 is legenddary. Sign me up for this kooky caricature of a Hollywood icon.
‘Tom Wambsgans’ from SUCCESSION Segues to Sexy Spy Series
“Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen is attached to star as ‘George Smiley’ in LEGACY OF SPIES, a TV series project based on John le Carre’s series of novels featuring the career intelligence officer character.”
Sounds intriguing but is it funny???
Jason Sudeikis Brings Back TED LASSO To Pay For His Divorce
Yay I guess? Still need to watch the original seasons.
TANGY THEATER:
Don’t Cry For Me Rachel Zegleina!
“Rachel Zegler star of Steven Spielberg’s screen version of WEST SIDE STORY (2021) and the soon-to-be-released Disney live-action movie SNOW WHITE (2025), will make her London theater debut as Eva Perón in a revival of the garlanded Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Evita, director Jamie Lloyd confirmed to Deadline on Friday.”
[Zegler’s agent lighting a cigar with $100 bill]: “She only stars in Iconoclassic IP so unless your IP is Iconoclassic or from a Legendary Library or is the Mount Rushmore of Roles, it’s a hard pass-a-dena, baby.”[as he exhales in your face]
COMING SOON:
THE SHROUDS - Long live the new fabric!
THE LIFE OF CHUCK - I’m getting Bob Zemeckis HERE (2024) vibes here!
F1 - *the F1 key is universally linked to Help in almost every PC program ;)
THE UNINVITED - Not to be confused with THE UNINVITED (1944) or UNINVITED (1987) or THE UNINVITED (2009) or UNINVITED (2024)!
FREAKIER FRIDAY - Legacy Sequel Feature Length Super Bowl Spot but it’s good to see our Lindsay back on the A-List theatrical screen!
SPINAL II - Why God, why
ONE TO ONE: JOHN & YOKO - Wonder if Mark David Chapman is gonna have a watch party?
GOVERNMENT CHEESE - What if the Coen Brothers meets Wes Anderson with a touch of TWIN PEAKS but an all Black cast? Sounds like The Big Cheese to me.
YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS - Not to be confused with YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS (1998). But this seems like the logical conclusion to what if Don Draper lost his cushy job?
Another good rainy day movie to watch is STEPHEN KING’S IT (1990) with Tim Curry as ‘Pennywise the Clown.’ The two-part mini-series is so epic that by the time you finish watching it the rain will have stopped and the storm since passed.
Until next week, Hotliners! Thanks for calling in.
