Hollywood Hotline - Week of June 27, 2024
HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Howdy Hotliners,
IATSE Reaches Tentative Deal with the Studios! [Homer Simpson sick with food poisoning]: “DUFF GARDENS, HURRAH!” And here I was just reading that the studios were showing “a lack of urgency” in the negotiations. Huh. Who would of thought. I thought for sure it was gonna go down to the wire. Midnight hour. August 1 Cold War tactics. But I guess not! Time to pop the champagne, fam! (Even if the deal falls through I still need a drink! ;)
Without further ado, let’s check the hotline:
Taking money from a Kushner? And giving him a seat on your board. Hmmm. . . Per the article: “[A24 did not] specify how it will use the funds. Deadline hears it will invest in and expand production and distribution and continue work on initiatives beyond the screen from music and publishing to consumer products and live theater. Its complementary businesses include production and management firm 2AM, makeup and skin care brand Half Magic, and NYC’s Cherry Lane Theatre.” What do you wanna bet that the A24 founders all went to Harvard together with Josh Kushner? And that they’re all in Skull and Bones? Also, how the fuck is any company worth $3.5BN? Imagine a monkey sitting on top of a pile of 3,500,000,000 bananas and not letting any other monkeys eat those bananas. That monkey would be insane, right?
“Don't you know you're going to shock the monkey? Hey, hey! Shock the monkey!”
Director Osgood Perkins (LONGLEGS 2024, GRETAL & HANSEL 2020) is adapting a Stephen King tale: “based on the author's 1980 short story of the same name, [it] follows twin brothers ‘Hal’ and ‘Bill’ as they discover a cursed toy monkey in their attic that causes the deaths of people in their community. The brothers throw the monkey away but must reunite when it begins to kill again. [It] stars Theo James, Elijah Wood, and Tatiana Maslany, among others.” Finally, a monkey movie that can really shine!
Alfonso Cuarón is Plus-ing it Up!
“Based on the bestselling novel (2015) of the same name by Renée Knight, DISCLAIMER follows acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett), who “built her reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others.” Per the logline, “When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realize she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets. As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) and their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee).” I thought this was Director Cuarón’s first foray into television but he apparently did a show called BELIEVE back in 2014, which I’ve never heard of. Here’s the trailer to that:
Jeffrey Wright and Michael Fassbender Plus-ing It Up Together
George Clooney is rebooting “French political drama series THE BUREAU (2015-2020). [Which is a] political thriller [that] follows Martian (Fassbender), a covert CIA agent, ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage. Wright will play Henry, the Director of Operations and mentor to Martian (Fassbender).
Sony is rebooting STREET FIGHTER (1994), which sadly wasn’t as good as the OG video game no matter how much I love the late great, Raúl Juliá (1940-1994). Hopefully they just make it like BLOODSPORT (1988) with Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross score.
Harmony Korine’s “heady slate marks a busy period for [EDGLRD!]”
This “filmmaker/artist” should give all of us hope for own hopes and dreams and ambitions as it shows and proves that any lizard brain licking its own eyeball on a rock in a barren wasteland can always find flies to attract! Never give up the dream! Never surrender forever!
Film Stock of Hollywood’s Golden 1970s-80s Era Explained!
YouTuber In Depth Cine breaks down how Kodak Eastman’s 5247 100T II film stock was The Shit. (Now I know why I love the first three FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980-81-82) film stocks as opposed to Part IV’s (1984) different grain film stock!)
COMING SOON:
NOSFERATU - We are so back, baby!
THE DEVIL’S BATH - This looks intense. Am a fan of this period spooky genre. Sign me up for a soak!
HERETIC - I stopped watching after the candle turn reveal —as I want to go into this as cold as humanly possible and be as surprised but I’m getting ‘Jigsaw’ by way of Hugh Grant vibes and I am bloody well here for it.
HERE - Oh my de-aging Marwen Christ! Someone let Bob “Tennis Shoe” Zmeckis out of the basement again! And he’s back on his shit. I couldn’t finish watching this Toys-R-Us AI commercial-like crap. From the director of: a movie 24-yrs ago (CASTAWAY), a movie 27-yrs ago (CONTACT), a movie 30-yrs ago (FORREST GUMP), and a movie 39-yrs ago (BACK TO THE FUTURE) comes a new movie in 2024 for today. . .
FLIGHT RISK - Directed by Mel Gibson because he looks far too gone/haunted to be on screen without haunting those look directly at him. I hate to admit I might have to see this because of Mark Wahlberg’s hair and dialect choices. “It’s how I would’a played it!” —Screamed Mel Gibson before lunch, probably
Until next week, Hotliners! Thanks for calling in.
