Hollywood Hotline - Week of December 5, 2024
HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Howdy Hotliners,
Hope y’all had a wonderful Thanksgiving last Thursday. I myself re-watched PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES (1987) for the 28th time on official record, although the actual number of times I’ve re-watched it is incalculable. I have memories of reenacting scenes from it when I was camping in 5th grade. That’s how many times I’ve seen it to give you a rough idea. Never gets old. John Candy face freeze frame gets me every time.
TOP STORY:
Disgraced screenwriter Max Landis, like herpes, is back. One of his past specs, DEEPER, which he allegedly wrote in a single day, all to impress his then-girlfriend at the time, once had Bradley Cooper attached but now has Tom Cruise and Doug Liman trying to get the Live, Die, Repeat band back together to give us some more of that Barton Fink Feeling again. It just goes to show you:
THE HOLLYWOOD METHOD:
Read script
Spend 9 years trying to find better script
Return to original script
Make it
Repeat
Without further ado, let’s check the Hotline:
FUTURE FILMS:
Barry Keoghan (SALTBURN 2023) is playing Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes one of four The Beatles movies for Sony. Wonder if the movie will show Ringo Starr acting in the comedy classic CAVEMAN (1981)? I’m sure it’ll be as good as BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (2018).
Why make one biopic when you can make four for four times the price? Because money, that’s what I want!
TRENDY TV:
Baby Reindeer Has Found His Baby Brother Jamie Bell
BABY REINDEER (2024) writer/producer/star Richard Gadd is making a new limited series at HBO opposite Jamie Bell (BILLY ELLIOT 2000) that will film in Scotland, titled, HALF MAN, which “will follow a long and complicated friendship between two men. The show’s description reads, “When Niall’s (Bell) estranged ‘brother’ Ruben (Gadd) shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults — with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. It will capture the wild energy of a changing city — a changing world, even — and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question: What does it mean to be a man?”
I was a fan of BABY REINDEER so sign me up.
She’s also starring in LUCKY, a limited series for AppleTV+ “which centers on a young woman (Taylor-Joy) who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.”
I was a fan of THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT so sign me up.
Ferris Bueller’s Son Acting While Still in College
Matthew Broderick’s son, “James Wilkie Broderick is a senior at Brown University, where he studies classics and acting [and will guest star] in his first major role. . .in an upcoming episode of CBS’ anthology crime series, ELSBETH. Tony winner Matthew Broderick will be the Special Guest Star in the episode, which will air in 2025.”
It’s so funny that I live my whole life not even knowing that certain famous actors have kids only to discover one day, that not only do they have kids, but they have adult kids, adult kids who act, adult kids who act while still in college, natch ;). What a great internship!
TANGY THEATER:
Ewan McGregor to be a Master Bater —I mean, Builder!
Returning to the theater for the “first time in 17 years with a remake of Henrik Ibsen’s 1892 play THE MASTER BUILDER. The new project was written by American playwright Lila Raicek and will be directed by Michael Grandage. The play will run on London’s West End between April and July 2025. [The play] follows Halvard Solness, an acclaimed architect of a small Norweigan town who begins to unravel over fears his young rival will overtake him. The play was adapted for the big screen in 2013 by Jonathan Demme (1944-2017).”
Never read the play or even knew Jonathan Demme adapted it. Will definitely have to check out!
