HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Archives
Happy Halloween Hotliners!
What are we all dressing up as tonight? I saw some pretty great photos on Instagram of my friends and family’s kids dressing up. My old high school buddy has a young son who dressed up as ‘Michael Myers’ aka ‘The Shape!’ and another buddy whose son went as ‘Deadpool.’ I also subbed 6th grade today and saw a lot of kids dressed up as a lot of things, including one kid dressed as ‘Pennywise the Clown’ from Stephen King’s IT (2019, 2017, 1990), while another kid dressed as ‘Georgie’ —the kid in the yellow poncho who gets his arm ripped off in the cold open. Costume comes complete with severed arm and red balloon! At first when I saw him, I thought he was dressed up as Tommy Jarvis played by Corey Feldman in FRIDAY THE 13th: A NEW BEGINNING (1985) from that cold open, but I’m dating myself. . .
TOP STORY:
David Fincher Pulls Ripcord on His Golden Parachute
I can only hope that David Fincher is remaking Netflix’s series, SQUID GAME (2021-2025) so that he can then in turn resume/continue making episodes of MINDHUNTER (2017-2019) because he set up the BTK serial killer as the Big Baddie in that and never got to deliver. It’s like Chekhov’s Serial Killer that never paid off. It must be paid off! The Serial Killer must go off. I couldn’t get through more than 1-2 episodes of original series. Just wasn’t into mass murder? But I get how the Nickelodeon Family Double Dare but with gun turrets chopping you down with .50 cal angle is appealing to our basest, darkest, nihilistic impulses.
Without further ado, let’s check the Hotline:
FUTURE FILMS:
Finally, an OREGON TRAIL movie! Based off the classic 1971 classroom computer class floppy disk video game we all grew up playing. I loved playing this as a kid because it was pure narrative drama. “Your wife Sally got bit by a snake.” Oh no! Not Sally! I’d feign.
CLIFFHANGER (1993) reboot with James Bond instead of Rocky
“Get off my back Qualen!” While I’m disappointed AF they’re not bringing the one and only bone Stallone, I’m very happy I can revisit the original anytime. CLIFFHANGER has one of the greatest trailers ever made. HANG ON!
Olivia Wilde and Gael García Bernal To Be Monkeying Around Together
“In MONKEY HILL, an heiress accused of a white-collar crime hides away with her husband at a luxury resort in an Indian holy city. In deep denial of the growing scandal, they distract themselves with sexual escapades and spiritual dalliances. Meanwhile, the hotel staff who pamper them by the pool return each night to a village plagued by civil unrest and a deadly water crisis. When the couple ventures past the hotel gates that protect them, they awaken the sleeping giant of fate. [Project] which will be directed by Sarah Adina Smith (Birds of Paradise) who wrote the script based on the Paul Theroux story of the same name.” Sounds timely. Sign me up.
BLACK SWAN (2010) Writer Making Feature Directorial Debut
“Described as a “terrifying new genre film,” the film follows the young couple Patrick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail on a journey to a new-age retreat in New Mexico, drawn by the possibility of healing after a traumatic event. Patrick is willing to do anything to help his wife but becomes distrustful of the retreat’s enigmatic leader even as Abigail falls under her spell. As paranoia builds, the couple must determine if the group’s unconventional spiritual practices offer genuine healing – or mask a terrifying truth that threatens to consume them both.” Darren Aronofsky producing. Sounds trendy. Pencil me in.
Johnny Depp is back, baby? In Aptly Titled DAY DRINKER
Two years since Depp v. Heard, Depp is back in the studio movie fold with Lionsgate making a feature with him and Penelope Cruz “Based on an original spec screenplay by Zach Dean, DAY DRINKER watches as a cruise ship bartender meets a mysterious day drinker — only for both of them to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways.” Marc Webb (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2012) directing. Naw. I’m good. Thank you.
TRENDY TV:
With MINDHUNTER Still Canceled How About PRISONER
TV show from BRIDGE OF SPIES (2015) screenwriter, Matt Charman, about: “a relationship drama that dives into what a serial killer can teach an ordinary person about what it takes to survive in his world. Casting is underway.” Serial killers so hot right now. Hansel.
TANGY THEATER:
GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK Coming To Broadway, Baby!
“The play, which Clooney wrote with Grant Heslov, will begin previews at the Winter Garden Theatre March 12, 2025, with an opening night set for April 3. Clooney will also make his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck in the role of journalist Edward R. Murrow. The stage play is based on the 2005 film written by Clooney and Heslov and follows Murrow’s clash with U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy as Murrow pushes to continue reporting on McCarthy’s anti-communist efforts. David Cromer, who won a Tony Award for his direction of The Band’s Visit, will direct the production. Sounds timely time again.” Sounds timely yet again.
COMING SOON:
QUEER - Guadagnino seems committed to the tale of unrequited gay love in a harsh world so it makes sense he’d make his way to Burroughs’ underground classic
PADDINGTON IN PERU - I liked PADDINGTON 2 (2017) a lot more than I should have
BLACK DOVES - Keria Knightly as John Wick? I dunno
HEART EYES - Did AI make this?
NIGHTCRAWLER - Would you believe it’s the 10-yr anniversary of this modern classic?
THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE Atari 1983 Video Game - I honestly can’t believe this is a real thing!
Until next week, Hotliners! Stay safe! Don’t eat too much candy! Thanks for calling in.
