Can’t send email more than 500 miles (2002)

https://web.mit.edu/jemorris/humor/500-miles

Summary: A campus email system faced an issue where emails could not be sent over 500 miles. The problem was traced to a consultant who upgraded SunOS but downgraded Sendmail, causing a configuration mismatch. The zero timeout setting in the sendmail.cf file led to a connection abort in about 3 milliseconds, limiting the email sending distance.
