Note: I thought I’d sent this on, like, Wednesday, and since I didn’t and since I also didn’t watch that much this week due to Holidays, this will take the place of this week’s Fujo Corner.
‘Tis the season, by which I mean it’s the time of year when production companies start releasing pilot teasers for their upcoming shows, and the belle of the ball, the star on the tree (if only for the fact that they’re the biggest production house) is GMMTV. This year, instead of splitting it up into 2 parts for spring and fall, they showed all the trailers for 2025 at once, which meant that I woke up at 5 a.m. to watch a 4 hour long live stream. And yes, it was worth it.
The ~theme~ this year was “Riding the Wave,” which turned out to mean riding the T-wave and Thai “soft power,” which in this case meant that out of 20 shows previewed, only one was confirmed for sure Heterosexual Romance (I Love “A Lot of” You). They are leaning into the queer market, hard.
Some trends: Shows that at one point might have been either gen or ensemble (Dare You to Death or Mu-Te-Luv, for example) now have bl couples in them in place of a heterosexual romance. There were a lot more genre bls, and a lot of fantasy/supernatural shows specifically. A sharp decrease in school romcoms, which means that people who attack GMMTV for that specifically will need to find something else to complain about.
I debated how to cover what's being released and decided to present them as superlatives. Let’s start with:
Most Likely to Cause Discourse: Love You Teacher
This show is such a monkey’s paw. It’s directed by Dome, who did Peaceful Property, and it stars Perth and Santa, who I individually find charming and though I have not seen them act together outside of about 1 minute in Perfect 10 Liners, they are tremendously cute in all their behind the scenes stuff. And the show starts out with them being a deeply passionate established couple! That’s great!
And then it turns out it’s about Santa’s character getting a head trauma that causes him to regress to age 7. Dome, why would you do this to me? The thing is, I know there will have to be more to it than just that, and this is one of the trailers that is a pure concept pitch—very few other characters have been cast, and it seems like the premise is the main thing that’s been settled. But even so, it’s trope I don’t really like, and I just know there will be discourse about dating someone who is mentally a child on some days.
That being said, Perth especially was so good in the trailer, and it’s very possible this will end up being touching. I just need Dome to tell me if the age regression is permanent. Please. Dome tell me. I promise I won’t tell anyone else.
Most Confusing Trailer: Melody of Secrets
I should have known the instant I saw the color grading that this was a Snap25 production. And if Snap25 is going to do anything, it’s make the most batshit television that has ever graced your eyes. Do I know what’s going in this show? No! I think Force might be Wicker Park-ing Book, but he’s also possibly the Hannibal to Jan’s inspector character? Boun is also there? Violin seems to play a significant role?
Anyway, I don’t know if I think this looks good, per se, but it’s apparently a completely original script so I bet it’ll go through some big revisions before seeing the light of day. And even if it’s bad, if it’s at least entertaining, that’s all I ask for.
Least Indicative English Title: A Dog and A Plane
Let me get this out of the way: I am absolutely thrilled about this show. A romcom of errors where a trashbag EMT ends up owing money to a flight attendant who asks him to investigate his cheating pilot fiance? And it’s TayNew directed by Jojo, which means it’ll be horny? You BET I will be there. However, the English title is referring to a saying in Thai that doesn’t translate particularly well about trying to romance someone of much high status. There are, as far as I can tell, no dogs.
The concept for this show seems a little more fleshed out than some of the others; they’ve at least got the A and B couples settled for sure (MarcPoon getting to be at each other’s throats!). It tickles me to see that Tui is apparently good enough at acting that they offered him another role in something. Good for him!
Show I Am (As Of This Moment) Least Likely to Watch: My Magic Prophecy
Sorry to Jimmy and Sea, but they’ve never thrilled me as an actor pair. I do like that they seem to be more continuously antagonistic in this show, since I think that dynamic might work better for them, but the real problem with this trailer is that I have no idea what the fuck it’s about other than I guess Jimmy is in danger from something and Sea is a tarot reader. Other than that, I got nothing.
Most Cats: Cat for Cash
They picked three actors at GMMTV most often represented by cat emoji and put them all in a show about saving a cat cafe. I’m really glad that First and Khaotung get another show where they are The Leads For Real—it’s been ages!—and that this one is more romcom than drama, even if they did get Khaotung to cry for the trailer. Look, when you’re that good at crying, you gotta do it for the camera.
Trailer That Made Me Nearly Scream Except That It Was 6 A.M. and People Were Sleeping: Only Friends: Dream On
From the opening of this trailer, I was in. This is because I am at my heart an EarthMix girlie, and seeing them open-mouth make out after knowing we came so close to that in Moonlight Chicken had me ascending into the sky. Then they revealed OhmLeng, also being wildly horny, and JossGawin, and THEN Neo showed up and the bass line from “Let’s Try” started and I ascended into the stratosphere.
I did not think we were getting an Only Friends sequel, although I think this is anthology style more than a direct sequel. It was, I think, very smart to make this set around the production of a play, both because theater gays are horny and dramatic and because it gives them a built-in reason for these characters to have to interact and get along to at least some degree. I know that it was probably filming constraints that led to the opening part of the trailer being shot as a oner, but it worked so well.
I am both thrilled and very scared about what this show means for my future. I deeply enjoy all these actors and I’m going to have to watch them be gay and messy and toxic for twelve episodes. I may not survive.
Most Likely to Win Awards: Memoir of Rati or Ticket to Heaven
One is a prestige period piece set in the 1910s with themes of class inequality. The other is a prestige period piece set in the 1990s about coming of age as a gay kid in seminary school. These are both awards bait at its finest.
I have to say, it’s genuinely fascinating to see a Thai show about Catholic guilt. The Thai Christian population is so small that I’m surprised when they show people actually celebrating Christmas in shows, let alone this show that is all about faith and being queer.
Both of these shows are probably going to make me cry. I’m less worried about Ticket to Heaven having a sad ending than Memoir of Rati, but Fourth was already tugging at my heartstrings in that teaser, man!
To sum up the other shows:
Dare You to Death: Honestly, this is one of the shows I’m most excited about! An insane twisty action thriller with Joong and Dunk as rival investigators who GO UNDERCOVER AS A COUPLE AT LEAST ONCE? This is everything my AO3 bookmarks have dreamed of. They seem to have this one pretty much figured out, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it started airing relatively soon.
Head 2 Head: Sea and Keen feel like a natural fit for a Director New show, and I’m interested in the future visions aspect and how that’s going to play out. Delighted to see Surf from I Saw You In My Dream in this!
Burnout Syndrome: My overwhelming feeling watching this was holy shit Dew is so tall. Is that the point I should be taking away from the toxic yaoi of it all? Probably not, and yet that’s where I’m at. Nuchy coming back with a horny, fucked-up show for OffGun is like King Arthur returning in our time of need.
Whale Store xoxo: I actually think there’s something of dearth of true romcoms in the GL space—a lot of what’s out there leans towards melodrama and angst, and this is the kind of silly light-hearted story I crave. Milk getting to play her age is a delight. GMMTV is really into exes as the b couples this year, huh?
That Summer: I’m not sure they totally know what they’re going to do with this show aside from a) amnesia (possibly faked?) and b) secret prince, but that’s enough of a pitch for now!
My Romance Scammer: Genuinely very excited about the prospect of a gay marriage show about two guys scamming rich cousins. This is what marriage is all about! It’s extremely funny to me that they gave biggest Ohm another actor named Fluke, and I’m loving that Markji gets to be the responsible cousins while Fluke is impulsive and romantic. I love con artists stories, ngl, and I especially love when they get got by their own con.
Mu-Te-Luv: Including this because even though it’s an anthology show, it’s got a SeaKeen story and an OhmLeng story. I think the idea of seven love stories based around the supernatural/good luck etc. is such a fun idea, and I’m excited to see how they all play out! I’m also so happy that there’s a story about kathoey—I was just thinking recently that we don’t have very many BLs that have decidedly femme characters and this one looks fun. Plus I love Lego.
Girl Rules: We have EARNED our TOXIC WLW version of Only Friends, and they gave us such a treat with this one. Not only do Milk and Love get to be horny for real, View has been given a new partner who is TINY. Height difference yuri!! I am so thrilled to see what mess this produces and who else they end up getting to appear in this show.
Boys In Love: This is actually one of the shows I’m currently most excited about, both because I deeply enjoy opposites attract school romances and because this seems like a pretty developed idea. And they put the nail in my coffin by adding Podd and Papang as teachers who fall in love! It’s giving boy version of 23.5.
Me and Thee: This is another show where they clearly only have the basic premise and the core cast, but what a premise and core cast. I truly did not think we were going to get a PondPhuwin show now that Pond is back in school, and not only do we get one, he’s playing a camp soap-opera obsessed mafioso? This is genius. I kiss them on the face. I hope Perth and Santa end up being in this show for real, and that maybe they’re able to bring Est’s storyline from his sequel book into this too. Excited to see how this ends up progressing.
Wu: IMINA SKYNANI!! No one, including them, know what this show is actually going to be, but it looks like it will at the very least be some kind of wuxia-style action show, which thrills me deeply. They can be playing bros or love interests and it’s fine because they are canonically bound together by fate and whichever way you spin it, I can make that work for my nefarious purposes.
Anyway, my current ranking of shows I’m most excited about based on how crazy I think they’ll make me:
Dare You to Death
Only Friends: Dream On
A Dog and a Plane
My Scammer Romance
Boys in Love
Most of others look good or at least interesting, and obviously these are all just pilots—I’m assuming a lot of these will change drastically in development.
The future is bright, and full of yaoi. Less full of yuri, which is sad, but it does seem like they’re audience testing new ships between Pluto and the two shows they’ve got in this lineup. I think once they have more than two branded GL pairs, we’ll see more shows. They did announce the first GL fancon, which seems like a promising sign! Only Nanon is left holding down the fort with his hetero show. This is the future liberals want.
