Episode 24: Birthday BL

hk's fujo corner

Due to it being my birthday last week, I was immensely busy with real life plans and thus unable to do the important work of writing my fujo newsletter, although I was able to catch up on a few shows.

Currently Watching (on air)

Sweet Tooth Good Dentist: I still don’t really know what the overall arc of this show is meant to be, even if I am enjoying it. It’s very slice of life, but even slice of life shows usually give you some idea of the scope, and this one…hasn’t. It seems like maybe there’s still more to resolve with Sant’s mom (and btw, that stuff made me get all misty-eyed) and still some mysteries to Jay, so it isn’t like I can’t see places it’ll go, I’m just not sure what the end destination is.

One thing I really liked from the last couple episodes was the conversation between Gugg and Yada about her bisexuality and how she feels pressured to pick one or another while simultaneously feeling anxious about not being able to offer her ex what a man might. It was an interesting conversation, and a more nuanced discussion of bisexuality than most BLs are capable of having.

My Stubborn: I need to figure out what song was playing over this week’s nc scene, because it was a banger, but googling the lyrics was doing me zero good.

Anyway, this show is killing me, because it’s trash, but it’s trash I am gobbling up like a raccoon. They all work in the least professional office of all time (only slightly mitigated by the fact that they’re apparently all 26 or younger), and they spend too much time actually in the office for me to know so little about what they do or have any sense of the stakes for any fuck-ups.

I’ve been trying to figure out if Sorn actually knows he’s into Jun, romantically, and it’s still impossible to tell because he has no reason to be honest with Penny (who by the way needs to chill the fuck out). He does at least know that he really wants to fuck Jun, constantly, which is something? Maybe?

Pit Babe 2: This show is absolutely killing me because my lack of interest in Babe and Charlie’s relationship persists, so I am in essence more or less the same as Chris, whose bombastic eyeroll at Pete being like, Charlie’s boyfriend is injured, was so unbelievably funny. I’m so glad Nut gets to play a role where he queens out, he deserves that.

And we got the return of Kenta! It is my white whale that his partner isn’t Pete, because their storyline is absolutely deranged, but at least Garfield and Benz have great chemistry and they did find some believable reason to put them together.

My Golden Blood: This show is so bad you guys. It took until episode 10 for us to get any semblance of real stakes, which is partially because they wanted to preserve the plot twist for as long as possible, but they didn’t even have the energy to throw more red herrings than Nakan who could have one single time given them any indication of what’s going on. Hello??? And Neo is dead????

The Next Prince: If this show had been a YA novel when I was 15, I would have made it my entire personality. Charan is such a YA love interest—secretly good at fighting, art professor, probably a virgin, and a brooding bodyguard? The booktok girlies would be all over him.

The show is still batshit, but it’s very earnest about it’s batshit while also giving it to us entirely from Khanin’s perspective of going “y’all are insane.” So somehow it works. Jimmy playing an insane toxic misogynist is absolutely hysterical, as is whatever the fuck is going to be Net and JJ’s deal (JJ being introduced having a solo for the Emmaly national anthem made me lose it).

Boys in Love: This show is just so lovely to me. All of the characters are so cute and funny, and I love the teen energy of it. And yet they’re still finding ways to bring in the drama. It was pretty obvious that Shane’s family situation was going to become an issue at some point, but I didn’t expect it to be this soon (though I guess it is almost halfway through). My one thought about this show is that I wish it had the luxury of time like We Are so all the side characters could get further developed.

SponCon of the Week

  • The Lactasoy of love continuing in Boys in Love with the cute but awkward back and forth between Nut and Tan…love that they’ve continued to find a way to incorporate it.

BL News:

  • LOL Fest was this week, which gave us so much, from Gemini and Fourth performing “Teedee Tada” to Perth and Santa kissing on the mouth for fun to Joong cupping everyone’s faces as is his wont. A great time to be had by all.
