Episode 22: A lull in the storm

hk's fujo corner

I was having a conversation with a friend about what I’m watching recently and I was like I’m not watching anything, which is just empirically untrue, but compared to like the end of last year when I had a show every day, this is nothing.

Currently Watching (on air)

My Golden Blood: I’ve been referring to our watching party for this show as our weekly self-flagellation because I don’t think any of us are really enjoying this but all of us are just invested enough to want to see how it shakes out. My only bitch is Nakan, and I’ve reached the point of being irritated with the main characters where I’m like maybe we just let him do his evil plan. Let him eat all the humans or whatever. It’ll hopefully mean I see less of Joss’s dick.

Sweet Tooth Good Dentist: I always had a feeling that Jimmy would do great in a role where he gets to be unhinged, and I was right. Captain is both very stupid and very weird, and Jimmy is absolutely killing it. He’s so much more entertaining here than in any other project I’ve seen him in except maybe Bad Buddy. This moving into a genuine love triangle is going to be fun because I haven’t seen one of those in a hot minute (I don’t count ThamePo because Po was not aware that a love triangle was happening). I don’t really know where this show is going longterm, but I do like the characters a lot and am willing to see where they take me.

My Stubborn: It is perhaps a stretch to say I’m watching this show since a good amount of it I put on 2x so I don’t die of cringe, but honestly most of that is related to the B couple (I find Yoon genuinely unnerving to watch) and most of the things related to the “business.” What do they actually do? Unclear! Nevertheless, I find myself bizarrely compelled. The main pair have more chemistry than I expected, and I think the guy who plays Jun is pretty good at the brat energy, which is needed to make this work. This show is completely unhinged, but I’m definitely going to keep tuning in for the time being.

Boys in Love: Well that escalated quickly!!! This episode was so delightful on many levels—it was wonderful to see that Mon is just as unhinged of a simp as Kim. What do you mean you read like half of the existing issues of Doraemon in one afternoon??? And then there’s Shane and Kit…I love Shane, and the way they explored his character more in this. Much like Kit definitely has undiagnosed ADHD, Shane feels very much like he has undiagnosed anxiety in conjunction with being super smart, so while the level of introspection should feel jarring for a kid his age, I bought it for him since he clearly thinks a lot about how he’s reacting to things and is trying to figure out he feels.

And they kissed?? A mutual kiss in episode 2?? So not what I was expecting, and I cheered. They’re very sweet, and I’m interested in where this show is going. I suppose it’s not “boys falling in love” but “boys in love".”

Finished

Heesu in Class 2: I started getting a feeling a little over halfway through that this was going to be a no kissing show, which is truly my main complaint at the end of it. The one thing is that no one got to kiss, so at least there’s equality. I know people complain that the two straight characters got more when because of their non romance arcs, but I felt like the romance stuff was key to the personal arcs of both Heesu and Seungwon since in Heesu’s case it’s about never having been able to verbalize that he likes boys and Seungwon has the issue of not being able to say what he wants. Like, those are non romance issues that just happen to be tied heavily into the romance arc.

I dunno, I do get why people feel let down, especially if they read the manhwa first, but it very much was Heesu’s story to me because it’s also about the relationships he has and builds with the people around him and how he grows. I think it could have used more, sure, but I also think this is a more mainstream production? And so getting this much is pretty nice actually.

But truly, I liked it a lot. I liked the characters, and I looked forward to each episode while it was airing. I found it charming, and I’ll be the only person who liked it in the world I guess, and that’s fine with me lmao.

BL News:

  • Of all people, Toptap (formerly GMMTV) and Sunny (formerly MeMindY) have been doing a bunch of stuff together which makes me suspect that they have something in the works. I’m definitely intrigued!

  • Not really BL but tangential since Geonu has been in BLs, but congrats to Bain from JustB on coming out!!
