Durham Names Stephanie Mardis as Next Police Chief
Four months after Greensboro passed her over for an outside hire, Durham picked her to run its police department starting September 8.
- Mardis, currently assistant chief in Greensboro, brings more than 24 years of law enforcement experience and will be Durham's fourth woman police chief. She succeeds Patrice Andrews, who retired May 1; Deputy Chief Walter Tate has run the department as interim chief since.

Durham Commissioners Warn New SNAP Rules Could Cost County $4.6M a Year

A routine letter buried in the consent agenda carried the county's biggest financial warning of the meeting: new federal SNAP penalties could force a property tax increase.
- Commissioner Wendy Jacobs said new federal error-rate penalties would cost Durham $2.8 million in added SNAP administrative costs plus $1.7 million a year in benefit-cost penalties tied to the state's error rate, not Durham's own, for a combined hit exceeding $4.6 million pulled from sales tax revenue.
- Social Services Director Maggie Clapp said North Carolina is the only state among the roughly seven or eight that administer SNAP at the county level to pass those federal costs down to counties, leaving her staff to absorb more work with no added funding or positions.
