Trans Voices UK: Weekly Digest — 26 Jun 2026

The Weekly Beacon

June 18, 2026 — Standing Strong, Together

Welcome, friends and allies. This week, we're holding space for both the difficult and the defiant. Across the UK, and especially in Scotland, trans communities are showing us what resilience really looks like. Let's dig in.

🌈 Scotland: A Beacon of Progress

While Westminster stumbles, Scotland continues to lead with heart. The Scottish Government remains steadfast in its commitment to trans rights, with the Gender Recognition Reform Bill still a powerful symbol of what's possible when governments listen to their communities. Scottish trade unions—who remain substantially more progressive than the UK Labour leadership—are actively mobilising in solidarity with trans workers, proving that the grassroots are where real power lives.

If you're in Scotland this Pride season, know this: you are seen, you are valued, and your government has not abandoned you.

⚖️ The Fight for Fairness: EHRC Under Pressure

We won't sugar-coat it—the EHRC's new Draft Code of Practice is deeply troubling, threatening to restrict trans access to essential services. But here's the good news: 139 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion opposing it, backed by organisations like the Centre for Mental Health. This is democracy in action. Your voice matters, and your representatives are listening.

The Good Law Project, led by Jolyon Maugham KC, is organising legal resistance, arguing persuasively that anti-trans policies are part of a broader far-right agenda that harms everyone. We stand with them.

💔 Holding the Hard Stuff

We carry Brianna Ghey's memory with us always. This month, as her story is revisited in the media, let's remember that Brianna's life mattered—and that transphobic violence is the root cause of her tragedy. Her mother Esther has our compassion, but we must never let the narrative erase the hate that took Brianna from us.

Parents like Sophie Rebecca have spoken publicly about their fears for their trans children in this climate. To Sophie, and to all parents navigating this: you are not alone. There are support networks, safe spaces, and a community that will fight for your family.

✨ Community Spotlight

This week, we're celebrating Colours of the Gate, a brilliant grassroots fanzine raising funds for Mermaids UK, the Trevor Project, and the Transgender Law Center. Pick up a copy, share it wide, and show the world that our creativity is unstoppable.

Across the country, Pride events are happening—many with trans-led organising at their core. Whether you march, volunteer, or simply show up for a friend, your presence is an act of resistance.

🔭 What We're Watching

  • The EHRC Code challenge – Will the Starmer government enforce the restrictions? We're watching, and we're organising.
  • Scottish healthcare access – We continue to advocate for waiting list reductions and affirming care.
  • US court decisions – A temporary win in Idaho shows that the tide can turn. International solidarity matters.

💌 A Note to You

This week has been heavy. But look around you: at the unions standing up, the MPs signing motions, the fanzines raising funds, the parents speaking out, the friends showing up. We are not a footnote in someone else's story. We are the ones writing it.

Stay safe. Stay connected. And remember—you are loved exactly as you are.

With warmth and defiance, The Beacon Team
