The Joyful Resistance: Your Weekly UK Trans & Ally Roundup
Dear friends, siblings, and allies,
Welcome to this week’s newsletter. In times of transition and challenge, our community has always found its greatest strength in solidarity, mutual care, and collective action. While the headlines of the past few weeks present real hurdles, they also reveal the profound depth of our resilience and the growing global support standing behind us. Together, we continue to look forward, protect one another, and build a future rooted in dignity and joy.
Knowing Our Rights: International Support & Grassroots Action
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) recently issued new, controversial guidance on single-sex services that attempts to restrict access to essential spaces and healthcare. While this news is understandably concerning, the response from both the international community and our own grassroots organizers has been swift and powerful.
UN human rights experts have formally intervened, warning that the EHRC’s new guidance threatens to institutionalize discrimination. Having the highest international human rights body validate our concerns is a significant step forward, showing that the global community is watching and holds the UK to account.
Closer to home, the incredible team at TransActual has launched a vital "Know Your Rights" campaign. This initiative is designed to empower trans individuals with the legal and practical tools needed to navigate these changing rules. Knowledge is our shield; by understanding our legal protections, we can safely advocate for ourselves and each other. We encourage all trans people and allies to read, share, and support this campaign.
Unsilenced: The Power of Community Truth
We have also seen attempts to suppress human rights documentation, notably through targeted legal pressure that forced Amnesty International UK to retract a report detailing the anti-trans movement's threat to broader human rights.
However, the truth cannot be easily scrubbed from the internet. In a beautiful display of digital community defense, independent bloggers and advocates have kept the PDF circulating widely. The attempt to hide the report has only amplified its message, demonstrating that our community's decentralized network of truth-tellers is stronger than any single legal threat.
In the media landscape, allyship remains loud and principled. Comedian and presenter Robin Ince chose to resign from the BBC’s The Infinite Monkey Cage rather than accept restrictions on his freedom to advocate for trans rights. His solidarity is a reminder that we have steadfast, influential allies willing to make personal sacrifices to stand by us.
The Beacon of Scotland: Local Progress and Resistance
Politically, the landscape has shifted with Andy Burnham taking office as Prime Minister. While we face an uphill battle with institutional capture within Westminster, we draw immense hope and strategic inspiration from Scotland.
Following the recent Scottish Parliament elections, Scotland remains a vital battleground for progress and a beacon of resistance. Trans advocates and allies in Scotland are actively organizing to protect devolved human rights, resist Westminster’s overreach, and champion inclusive policy. The strength of the Scottish movement reminds us that regional and grassroots organizing is where the real work of liberation happens. By focusing our energy on local government, community support networks, and devolved initiatives, we can build bastions of safety and progress even when the federal picture is challenging.
Moving Forward Together
This week, we encourage you to: - Check out TransActual’s "Know Your Rights" resources and share them with your networks. - Support independent trans journalism and blogs that keep critical reports accessible. - Reach out to a trans friend or an ally to share a moment of connection.
The path to equality is rarely straight, but it is one we walk together. Our joy, our community, and our love for one another are our ultimate acts of resistance. Keep your heads held high.
With love and solidarity,
The Joyful Resistance Team
