Trans Voices UK: Weekly Digest — 02 Oct 2026

The Weekly Thread

News, solidarity and support for trans people and allies across the UK

Week ending 2 October 2026

A Note Before We Begin

This week's news is heavy, and some of it is distressing. Read at your own pace, skip what you need to, and look after yourself. Being informed matters, but so does rest. Our community has always got through hard times by looking after each other, and we will keep doing that.

🏛️ Labour Conference: Campaigners Turn Up the Pressure

As Prime Minister Andy Burnham addresses Labour's autumn conference, LGBTQ+ organisations are making themselves seen and heard. Activists argue that Burnham's government has continued the exclusionary direction set under Keir Starmer instead of reversing it. They point out that a government with a decisive majority could pass laws protecting trans healthcare and legal status, and could respond to adverse Supreme Court judgments.

The international picture shows why this matters. The UK has slipped towards "does not comply" in several categories of the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map, and human rights monitors including the Lemkin Institute continue to raise concerns about restrictions on gender-affirming care. Campaigners also criticised MP Kate Osborne after her LGBT+ address at the Council of Europe reportedly left out trans people altogether.

Why there's hope here: Backbench pressure is growing. Visible, organised protest at a governing party's own conference is how many historic shifts began. Every letter to an MP and every placard counts.

🕯️ Grief, Anger and Demands for Accountability

We share this with care. Following the fatal shooting of a trans person, campaigners have expressed deep anger after gender-critical commentator Graham Linehan reportedly praised the alleged perpetrators online. Community members are directing serious questions at CPS leadership and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley. They argue that repeated warnings about escalating incitement were not acted on.

If this news has hit you hard, you are not alone. Grief and fear are natural responses. So is the determination we are seeing across the community: people demanding accountability, checking in on friends and refusing to be silenced.

Coming up: We'll be watching for any legal or regulatory response from the CPS to public praise of violence against trans people.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland Check-In

No major Scottish developments reached us this week. Scotland's trans community and its allies remain some of the most organised and resilient in the UK. Groups such as Scottish Trans and LGBT Youth Scotland continue their steady, often unseen, work. If you have local Scottish news, wins or events to share, please send them our way. We'd love to feature them next week.

🌍 Across the Atlantic

In the US, where the second Trump administration remains hostile to trans people, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill designed to protect trans healthcare providers and out-of-state patients from prosecution. Many advocates on both sides of the Atlantic see parallels with Labour's position. Their argument is that when centre-left leaders back away from healthcare access, opponents gain ground rather than lose it.

It's a reminder that our struggles are connected, and so is our solidarity.

✊ Signs of Strength

Pushback continues, and it deserves celebrating:

  • Judicial accountability: The Trans Actual Care Campaign (TACC) has formally asked the UK Supreme Court for an independent review of how judicial complaints and rights-related determinations are handled. This is serious, determined legal advocacy.
  • A new patron: Actor Alan Cumming has been announced as patron of a leading UK trans rights charity. He will support fundraising and international advocacy. High-profile allies who use their platforms well make a real difference.
  • Consumer action: Grassroots boycotts of the Harry Potter franchise continue, as campaigners highlight J.K. Rowling's financial backing of groups lobbying against trans protections. Choosing where your money goes is a quiet but powerful act.

👀 What We're Watching

  • Burnham's agenda: Will backbench dissent push the government to make clear whether it will protect trans healthcare in law?
  • CPS response: Will there be consequences for public praise of violence?
  • US shield laws: How will clinicians respond to Newsom's veto, and can interstate protections hold?

💛 For Our Allies

This week, you can: - Write to your MP or MSP and ask where they stand on protecting trans healthcare. - Check in on the trans people in your life. A simple message can mean a great deal. - Donate to trans-led organisations if you're able to.
