20 May: First project, next steps, and get involved

This month, Heal Minds Gaza partnered with an artist in Gaza to paint murals that convey the mental health and emotional challenges facing Palestinian children who experience detention, and to raise awareness about their ongoing cause.

Our first project is complete!

A perspective photo showing a painted mural on a wall in Gaza, illustrating a child curled up on a prison cell floor next to a barred window and tally marks drawn on the wall. In an open doorway behind the child is an imposing soldier with a machine gun. Below the mural is some cropped text: "Children in prison often lose their sense of identity and innocence." To the side of the mural is the Heal Minds Gaza logo with the text "funded by Heal Minds Gaza project."

A photo showing a painted mural on the wall of a building in Gaza, illustrating a child sitting on a prison cell floor and looking at their tall shadow cast on the wall, like an adult's shadow. There is a barred window with barbed wire above the child, and the text "أنا نصفى هنا وكلي هناك". Below the mural is the text: "Nights in the prison are filled with deep psychological fear that follows them even after they leave." The Heal Minds Gaza logo is at the side.
“Nights in the prison are filled with deep psychological fear that follows them even after they leave.” The Arabic (أنا نصفى هنا وكلي هناك) translates to: “Half of me is here, and all of me is there [outside].”

This month, Heal Minds Gaza partnered with an artist in Gaza to paint murals that convey the mental health and emotional challenges facing Palestinian children who experience detention, and to raise awareness about their ongoing cause.

360 Palestinian children remain in occupation prisons. Those who have returned to Gaza grapple with enormous barriers to social reintegration in their communities. By placing these murals in visible locations in the children’s communities, we aim to promote collective awareness about their cause while helping them feel heard.

A photo from behind of a group of little kids gathered around the mural of the child looking at his shadow, without any text painted yet. There are bags and puts of ink on the ground.
Two artists photographed from behind as they paint a mural on a wall, one illustrating the Heal Minds Gaza logo, and the other painting the mural of the child crouching in a prison cell. In the background are tent tarps and buildings

Next for Heal Minds Gaza

Film: The project is finalizing production of a short film, in partnership with a local filmmaker in Gaza, to share crucial testimony from a child who was detained in an occupation prison, and discussion from legal and psychological experts about the violence that Palestinian children experience in occupation prisons. We anticipate completing the film by the end of May.

Testimonies and recovery kits: In our April update, we shared that we were shifting the project to better center the children’s complex needs while working around the difficult conditions on the ground. Right now, we’re working with local journalists on collecting the children’s testimonies, assessing their needs, and delivering their mental health recovery kits. We expect to share an update about this in the next three weeks.
