Pi Ships Zero Lines of MCP. Codex Ships 53,713.
Two agent codebases, same feature, and a 53,713-line gap.
Pi Ships Zero Lines of MCP. Codex Ships 53,713.
I grepped Pi's entire source tree for MCP support. Three hits, all incidental, one of them inside a vendored syntax highlighter. Codex had 53,713 lines across three crates when I counted on September 1.
I re-ran the count a week later. 55,418, across two crates. One had been deleted outright.
That movement is the point. Neither team is wrong. But a number that size, shifting three percent in a week with a whole crate disappearing, is not a fact about MCP. It is a fact about how much surface you take on when you decide a protocol is infrastructure, and about who keeps paying for that surface after the decision feels finished.
