Hardware Things: The Lean Edition
Hello!
This month's letter is slightly leaner and has a spotlight on a cold chain solution. Happy reading!
Hardware Things is supported by some lovely patrons who get some extra in-depth stories, see what you’re missing.
Things I Enjoyed Reading
Does Ebola now have a cure? Possibly, as some clinical trials in Congo have shown positive results. However, epidemiologists warn that announcements such as that could have a bad implication for disease control, as mortality avoidance does not equal viral clearance.
The world's biggest conference on makerspaces (Fab15) was held in Egypt last month, the first time on the continent. One of the most interesting products that launched at the conference is Ethafa - a STEM learning kit for kids in Arabic that is based on programmable 'characters' the user can tune.
Interesting Things
Xinabox - a development kit for prototyping CubeSats in South Africa.
Digikey's 23 Conversion Calculators has the most nerve-wracking conversions you need.
Company Spotlight
Transporting important medication can be a challenge due to the temperature that these drugs need to be kept at. GRICD, in Nigeria, is developing portable cold chain devices that can be remotely monitored to address some of these issues.
I caught up with Tega Iortim, the founder of GRICD, who is leading that effort about the nuts and bolts of their solution: The right medication at the right temperature 🔒.
Things To Apply For
In Kampala, Fenix International is looking for a CTO. They produce Fenix Power, a modular, lease-to-own solar home system financed through affordable installments.
