Five years with OPENRNDR

“Five years with OPENRNDR” presentation (click to play, 44 min.)

Dear subscribers,

I think it's now obvious that I'm more productive writing code for computers than words for fellow humans. But just to clarify, even if I could have been more generous with posts and newsletters, I was still busy creating and contributing.

I'll try to catch up during this holiday season and start by sharing a presentation I gave on my last night in Taipei this year, right before flying back home.

The friendly Creative Media Gathering team recorded me speaking, but the slides and live-coding parts were not registered, so I re-enacted it all and put together the video above.

Overall I'm happy with it, except one thing: based on my words it may sound as if OPENRNDR is only possible thanks to the automated scripts that take care of testing, building, generating screenshots and videos, etc. This is not correct: it's one very talented and productive Edwin who makes it all possible: Edwin Jakobs. It's him (with the OK of his colleagues?) who decided to release the framework with a Free Open Source license, to maintain it and to do the extra work required when you know others are using your creation. I'm very thankful for the last five years, and I'm looking forward to the next five :-)

Abstract, organic, code-generated complex texture. Wobbly golden strips surrounded by green glows on a dark background. Some areas contain small red areas.

And since my gratitude mode is on: I'm also thankful because in these times of planned obsolescence, my laptop recently crossed its 10th anniversary. With a replaced battery, a new keyboard, display and hard drive, but still computing like the first day. Here it is, converting key presses into characters for you to read, enabling me to contribute code to OPENRNDR at a quite acceptable speed, and doing all kinds of multimedia editing I ask it to do.

Its successor, a Framework laptop, will very soon arrive and take over for one more decade (I hope).

Thank YOU for being there and happy holidays! ^_^
