A Spacecraft Is Heading to Alpha Centauri. See You in 80,000 Years
The Fermi Explorer Mission, a nonprofit, plans to launch a spacecraft toward Alpha Centauri — our nearest star system at 4.4 light-years away — before the end of 2029. AI helped plot the mission. If everything goes perfectly, the craft arrives in roughly 80,000 years, which makes it the most optimistic long-term project in human history, narrowly beating out pension schemes. Ambitious is one word for it. Geological is another.

John Deere Built a Chatbot That Actually Knows What a Combine Harvester Is
John Deere is piloting "JD," an AI assistant that pulls from farmers' own field, machine, and operational data to advise on equipment settings, fuel usage, and best practices. Unlike most AI chatbots, which confidently answer questions they know nothing about, this one is at least tethered to real data from the actual farm it's talking about. Whether it hallucinates crop yields remains, delightfully, an open question.

New research finds that autonomous vehicles guided by large language models inherit human biases in pedestrian-yielding decisions — meaning the AI driving your car may already be treating some people on the pavement differently than others, depending on how it learned to model "common sense." The researchers argue public trust in self-driving cars depends not just on technical performance but on fairness. It turns out teaching machines to drive was the easy part. Teaching them not to pick up our worst habits is considerably harder.
