Join us in Bragg Creek for a weekend shaped by forest air, firelight, slow meals, and the rhythm of weaving.

A bit about the backpack

We will be spending most of our time together learning to weave a willow backpack using traditional basketry techniques.

Instruction will include:

• Catalan base
• Chased waling
• Triple French rand or zig zag weave
• Rod border
• Optional woven lid or inset handle
• Attaching cloth strapping
• Understanding the nuances between cultivated and wild willow
• Willow selection and how to choose materials for different parts of the basket

Natural cotton or linen webbing for the backpack straps will be provided. You are welcome to bring their own preferred materials. We will bring a collection of buckles, rivets, and hand sewing supplies and will provide assistance with attaching your straps.

I have included a few photos of backpacks that I have woven recently. As you can tell, I am partial to the inset handle, as I often find myself overstuffing my backpack with veg when I get groceries. However, you can make a lid if you prefer to keep your items more secure.
