Speaking of space…

• Third spaces are locations that aren’t home (AKA first space) or work (AKA second space), but somewhere that helps a community come together and find itself in a new way. On September 12th, my painting of Carpenters’ Hall, the epic third space that made the American Revolution possible, will be celebrated along with the Hall itself! All the info is here.

• Rainbows take up a lot of space in my world, but it wasn’t until I wanted to paint a Rainbow-ham Lincoln that I really looked into what this colorful atmospheric display means.

• The space between realism and abstraction is surprisingly small. In this article, I explore what abstraction means for everyone from Leonardo da Vinci to the contemporary painter Shayma Golden.

• My favorite books of the last few months all relate to space as well. Carissa Véliz’ Privacy Is Power is about where we can truly be ourselves, Tayari Jones’ Kin is about the homes we make in one another’s hearts, Douglas Stuart’s John of John is about the distance between societal expectations and our own humanity, and Becky Chambers’ To Be Taught, If Fortunate is about outer space.
