A Mural and Musings on Animal Life
A 330 square foot painting on the west coast and the first zoo in the United States on the east coast.
This August, I’ll be working on a 330 square foot mural of a redwood forest.
As I explain in this video showing the planning for the piece, the process will be intense and I won’t have time to make my usual posts as I paint, but I’ll be sharing shorter clips and maybe even a live Q&A or two over the course of the three weeks of work.

Still painting plenty of animals—both human and nonhuman ones!
On August 8th at 11 AM, the US’s first zoo will be celebrated with an event that includes my art! Join me at the Philadelphia Zoo for free stickers, a coloring page for otter lovers, ambassador animal meet-and-greets, and a Teddy Bear Clinic. You can watch the making of my artwork in pieces: the tortoises, the cheetahs, and the orangutans.
Zoos may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, either for themselves or for the animals, but these institutions are vital in a society that’s been flooded with AI-generated videos of wildlife.
Two recent portraits—one of a person named Rich and the other of one who goes by Richie—represent much more than the individuals they depict. First, this painting is a celebration of chosen family that includes a very special dog. Next, this portrait (featured in the latter part of the article) embodies one important way that my home has shaped me. I share it in the context of a post about how I was almost displaced from Lambertville, New Jersey.
