Game Dev Blog #1 - Project Lion

Welcome to my new development blog!

Hello, and thanks for subscribing! Given the state of social media these days, I figured it would be best to go back to a more personal method of communication - a newsletter.

My plan going forward is to use this platform as a monthly development blog, giving relevant news and updates on my current project, as well as any other bits of interest.

So, without further ado, let’s talk about:

Project Lion

What is Project Lion?

Project Lion is the code name I’ve given my new adventure game.

Why is it called “Project Lion?”

Obviously it would be a spoiler to tell you that. When I officially announce the game, it will become clear. And you’ll probably also think it’s very stupid.

Is Project Lion set in the same universe as Lamplight City and Rosewater?

No, after nearly a decade of making games set in that world, I decided to take a little break and focus on a very different (yet also familiar) setting.

How far along in development is it?

I started working on this game full-time in around September of 2025. Currently I’m still mainly focused on the design, which is to say writing out all the plot beats and puzzles.

As of this newsletter, I have fully designed the game’s prologue, as well as 4 out of 7 chapters. I’ve also built the prologue and most of Chapter 1 in Adventure Game Studio.

My goal is to have the game fully designed by June, and from there focus on building the rest so I can have a fully playable version of the game. After that, I’ll begin the dialogue writing, as well as continue working on background art and character animation.

Will it be published by ASH Games?

No, I’m planning on self-publishing this time around. I’ve loved working with ASH and plan on doing so again in the future, but this project is all on me.

Can you show anything?

As a matter of fact, I can! But not too much because I don’t want to spoil anything.

Why so sad, old man?
It’s not a pirate game, I swear

When will it be released?

I have no idea, but this game is definitely not going to take 6 years. Don’t expect it before 2028, though.

Other News

  • This June, I’ll be speaking at Narrascope about how indies can work with union voice actors without spending a fortune.

  • Rosewater has been nominated for several awards since release, including IndieCade (Best Performance) the Debug Indie Game Awards (Best Voice Acting) the LatinX Game Awards (Best Narrative & Best Game) it was nominated for 7 AGS Awards and won 4! (Best Programming, Best Visuals, Best Audio, Best Game)

That’s all for this month, I’ll be back in May with some more updates!
