One of the most visible murder trials in history just ended up with a verdict of "guilty" as a direct result of an 0day against iOS which was not disclosed to apple but ended up putting a murderer away for two life sentences. I am not exaggerating.

A Russian malware developer and hacker fled to Georgia (presumably to escape mobilisation) where he was arrested and extradited to the US.

Tampa, Florida – United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announces the arrest and extradition of Dariy Pankov a/k/a “dpxaker.” Pankov is charged with conspiracy, access device fraud, and computer fraud. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum penalty of 47 years in federal prison. The indictment also notifies Pankov that the United States intends to forfeit $358,437, which is alleged to be traceable to proceeds of the offenses.

28000 apps send data to TikTok. Leeching as much information as possibly is the norm for mobile applications. Reselling that data is endemic, it’s a core part of the ecosystem.

Treating a single app as a source of data leakage ignores the reality that all apps extract data, and most of that data is enriched, repackaged and sold (and resold). The problem is the system that extracts and distributes that data, not any one app. The solution is legislation to protect people by making data toxic.

Naturally the problem here is that users have no lobby promoting their interests, while the exploiters of data make fortunes from the status quo.


We Found 28,000 Apps Sending Data to TikTok. A Ban Won't Help.

Banning the TikTok app is like throwing a rock in the Mississippi river and hoping it stops the flow of water. The structure of the internet is designed to share data with anyone who wants it, China or otherwise. A real fix has to look far beyond one company.
