This is a misleading. The south is over a thousand kilometers (700 miles) away from Bangkok. 
“Restive” is underplaying it a tad much. There is an assassination or bomb practically every week. There isn’t a month that goes by without ppl dying violently from the insurgency. Thousands of people have died already.

The surveillance measures in the South are not reflective of the country as a whole. It is a war zone. Literally. They don’t protest down there, they bomb burn and shoot. 
The protests are by the Thais, who have a political stake and see themselves as having a voice. Not by the Muslims, who don’t. Conflating them is disingenuous bullshit. 
Other than that, pretty good report. There is a lot of unrest that they missed. The courts removing a PM for a cooking show, the Red Shirts shutting down the center of Bangkok, the Yellow Shirts seizing the airport for a week, the mass street protests that instigated the 2014 coup.
