An age stigma around doing hardcore abstract things (maths, hacking, etc.) is based upon a wrong assumption that youth is a key issue, while it's ability to spend enormous amount of time nerding being financially covered by parents and not having responsibilities that does it.

And this is why vendor is disadvantaged against a vulnerability researcher: developer's job is developing a product, not obsessing over memory corruption issues all year long which requires a dedicated full-time occupation which brings zero economic value to a vendor.
