This 1930s Austrian-built Ingelen Geographic radio that had a map of Europe in place of a conventional dial; tiny lights, powered by a forerunner of fiber optics, would indicate the location of each tuned station. pic.twitter.com/UQVWuN2rq9

in late 80s the US needed a target drone to properly emulate high performance Soviet supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles and ran a few programs to make some; but in early 90s, McDonnell Douglas fucking bought warhead/seeker-free Kh-31 Russian supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles https://t.co/eRxZp0orHj

Normally you are not supposed to sell your weapons to the expected adversary so they can practice shooting them down and also test their new systems against them

there's even a slide deck from Boeing effusively praising the MA-31 target drone (a Kh-31 with the warhead and original seeker removed) for its performance, reliability, and...ability to replicate Soviet anti-ship cruise missile threats (like the Kh-31) pic.twitter.com/33LAMHWSQ9

If your computer is equipped with a single NVIDIA 4090, it possesses greater teraflop computing power than the initial configuration of IBM's Blue Gene/L Supercomputer, the fastest in the world in November 2004.

The Blue Gene/L was valued at around $100 million at that time.… pic.twitter.com/J3p4nlL0jD

All generations of Blue Gene had only FP64 units. They ran FP32 on the FP64 pipes so they had the same throughout. You can’t compare FP throughput against a 4090.

BG/L cost $100M in total but that installation was worth about $16M ($1M/rack).
