“For every 30 minutes that someone watches TikTok, every day, they become 17% more antisemitic, more pro-Hamas based on doing that.” Imagine spending a few hours on it!https://t.co/LKYWxZJdc2
— Alberto Acerbi (@acerbialberto) December 11, 2023
This survey is problematic, and the conclusions are hard to take seriously. But it does speak to an actual phenomenon, and some truth about the real world.
TikTok content is overwhelmingly anti Israel, and some of it is antisemitic and/or pro Hamas. However, is unknown to what extent this is organic (probably mostly organic) versus how much is due to China adjusting the visibility of videos (probably some amount). There are plenty of factors that go into this, but I believe it is naive to believe either extreme (i.e. it is all China manipulation, or China isn’t doing anything.)
The other issue is that consuming content with a specific world view has some influence on people’s beliefs. Of course, people’s beliefs mostly control the content that they consume.
How much of the antisemitic and/or pro-Hamas content is actually recruiting people into extreme positions is completely unknown. Probably not many, but surely more than none?
Most of the research suggesting that disinformation convinces people to believe something new has been discredited. These days the scholarly opinion is that it has a lot less impact that many believe. As I’ve said before, “[most] propaganda is marching orders for the faithful, not recruitment messages for the opposition.”
But, humans are complex creatures and people seeking out anti Israel content to view will be more susceptible to antiseptic messages. It seems hard to believe that there will be no impact from all that antisemitic nonsense.
Here’s an exercise to do at home. If a viewer becomes 17% more antisemitic for every half hour of TikTok they watch, how many hours do they need to watch before literally becoming a Hamas militant?

Two bills reauthorizing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act are headed to the House floor. Meanwhile, FBI agents have used Section 702 databases to conduct millions of invasive searches for Americans’ communications, including those of protesters, racial justice activists, 19,000 donors to a congressional campaign, journalists, and even members of Congress.

Do yourself a favour and read the website for these pants, it’s very funny.
This website needs a cultural translation feature. In America this means you are an alcoholic, in Britain it means you an ordinary drinker, and in parts of Eastern Europe it means you are a temperance campaigner, or pregnant. https://t.co/076oGMpgxq

so, 1 of my coworkers in accounting casually admitted to me that she's probably an alcoholic. i said that if you're not drinking every day, you're probably not an alcoholic. she said she doesn't drink every day, but when she does, she kills almost a whole wine bottle. i said "oh"

CS2 currently has a serious vulnerability which could be used for fun or to plant harmful software on PC! Your system can be hacked in no time. This new bug works even with lobby invites, so simple idling in the game menu could be dangerous as well! pic.twitter.com/F9t6IfN0Mw

MSRC: won’t fix
Me: sent new info for the same bug, in the same email thread
MSRC: plz open a new case
C’mon, @msftsecresponse, this is the bug in YOUR software. At least you could make researchers happier by not following your bureaucratic process..
Update: MSRC changed their mind & going to patch w/ my new info. This is in fact the bug we mentioned in our Outlook paper (https://t.co/3tQFrL2Sp2), while MSRC initially didn't intend to patch. Stay tuned for a blog post as who don't love logical bugs?:)https://t.co/q7O4BeITA1

OMG, the AI Winter Break Hypothesis may actually be true?
— Ethan Mollick (@emollick) December 11, 2023
There was some idle speculation that GPT-4 might perform worse in December because it "learned" to do less work over the holidays.
Here is a statistically significant test showing that this may be true. LLMs are weird.🎅 https://t.co/mtCY3lmLFF
@ChatGPTapp @OpenAI @tszzl @emollick @voooooogel Wild result. gpt-4-turbo over the API produces (statistically significant) shorter completions when it "thinks" its December vs. when it thinks its May (as determined by the date in the system prompt).
