This is an excellent thread summarizing our paper about the flaws in a major cancer microbiome study; wish I'd written it myself. If you don't have time to read our paper, at least read this thread https://t.co/cOaMlWJOie

So there were two fatal flaws in the original study: first, the improper alignment exaggerated the abundance of microbial DNA by a factor of at least 100, and second, the "signal" used by the machine learning classifier was entirely derived from a normalization artifact. 25/

Open office noise significantly decreases your ability to do analytical work.

This controlled experiment found “open-office environments… can introduce seemingly mild stressors that impede analytical processing and hinder performance in complex tasks” https://t.co/2GQPChkbx7 pic.twitter.com/GQZayGIIcK

RV Jones, some lessons in intelligence

Editor’s Note: The award-winning author made the following remarks at a symposium at CIA Headquarters on 26 October 1993. Most of what I have to say here about say our common interest, the subject of intelligence, can be found in the two books, Most Secret War (or The Wizard War) and Reflections on Intelligence, which you already have. And, if there are matters arising from them on which you would like to question me, I shall be glad to respond. Compared with some of you, though, I spent a relatively few years in full-time intelligence, and most of my experience was gained around 50 I years ago. Therefore, I address you with some diffidence.

I dunno, I love the totally lazy handwaviness of "you see this network diagram with a big cloud labeled 'internet' between our datacenters? What if we put our servers... INSIDE that cloud!?? And what if it cost extra and the prices never went down despite Moore's Law?" https://t.co/A45iaUc5WJ
