At the Whim of the Weather

By Farmer Kalina

This time of year in particular, we are at the whim of the weather. Last week I was harvesting cauliflowers in a t-shirt in the sun. I was wishing for cooler weather to slow down their unseasonably quick growth. My wish was answered with snow. Snow! I can hardly believe it. Now this week I’m crossing my fingers that our crops will survive the few frozen nights that we are expecting. This unpredictability is both a challenge and a joy. I can honestly say that my job as a farmer is never boring. At times a quick change in the weather can completely alter our plans for the week; I could end up on the farm till the sun is going down, or stuck at home in the cold (that one is my fault for driving a vintage diesel truck that likes the cold even less than some of our more delicate crops). However, I appreciate the adaptability that farming has taught me. The demand to switch gears at a moment's notice and to do it with grace and creativity is a lesson I am happy to learn in life. No matter what mother nature throws our way, we have the ability and choice to move forward, readjust, and continue to grow the beautiful organic produce that we are passionate about.
