FARMER UPDATE
Summer Fun on the Farm by Farmer Erin
As the first day of summer arrives (didn’t it arrive weeks ago?), the barn is filling with tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, okra and I find myself checking on our peaches daily. Waiting for that plump, pink perfection is the definition of anticipation.
And speaking of anticipation, we’re looking forward to hosting the first in-person cooking class in our renovated farmhouse kitchen this Saturday. Our summer intern Reese is a talented chef who will be teaching how to make the most of what the fields are producing. Not only will you pick up a few cooking skills, I guarantee you’ll enjoy a delicious four-course meal (for only $30!)
Bringing the 1902 Bergstrom Farmhouse back to life is a joy. Last week one of the Tiny House residents hosted an art show that showcased the beauty of our former home as well as her father's southwestern vistas (a few of Kerry Beverly's paintings are still available). This summer we will be working on developing a Farmhouse Arts series for the fall — everything from clay classes to supper clubs to cooking and dancing…now that Covid is lifting, it’s time to celebrate!
This Saturday morning we’ll also celebrate the bounty of our flower fields as we wrap up our flower season with a crown making class. Foraging for flowers and herbs and other materials will be part of the fun as we create a one-of-a-kind crown. (Avery will make a portrait of you and your creation in her studio). Perfect gift for Dad or just fun with your friends. Sign up at www.greengatefarms.net.
Finally, our season ends with our Farm Camp for Adults class, originally planned for when Winter Storm Uri hit! This class is a great way to meet others who are interested in farming and gardening, while getting tips on tools, equipment and other agricultural issues.
Hope to see you on the farm soon.
