We Have the Facts and We're Rejecting Your Pitch
Hey, everyone! Welcome to this blog/newsletter I’m starting completely on a whim. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Grant Sharples. I’m a freelance writer with bylines in MTV News, Consequence of Sound, Paste, AltPr***, and FLOOD. I mostly write about music, but I enjoy many facets of pop culture, such as movies, books, video games, television, and more (what else is there actually?). You might know me as the guy who tweets about Waluigi way too much, or you might know me as the guy who got 14k views on his 8th-grade guitar cover of Sum 41’s “Fat Lip” on YouTube. The like-dislike ratio is unimportant.
I’m calling it We Have the Facts and We’re Rejecting Your Pitch. It’s partly a play on the title of Death Cab for Cutie’s second album, and it’s also a joke about how I can barely land any pitches right now. I imagine this newsletter will serve as a home for rejected pitches or for things I want to write about and have zero hope that it will successfully land anywhere.
Full disclosure: I have no idea what I’m doing. I have no determined schedule for myself, meaning that I’ll write about whatever I want whenever I want. I do have a vague concept of a handful of topics I’d like to cover in the next month or so. First Cow starts streaming tomorrow, so I will (probably) write about that. Paper Mario: The Origami King releases on July 17, and the original Donkey Kong Country comes to Nintendo Online the day prior, so I will (probably) write about both of those games. People invariably mispronounce my last name, to a degree where I mostly don’t even notice it, so I will (probably) write about that, as well. Arcade Fire’s seminal third record The Suburbs turns 10 next month, so if I don’t write about it for an established outlet, expect to read my thoughts on that here.
Admittedly, this is a bit strange for me considering I’m a highly deadline-oriented individual, so simply allowing myself absolute creative reign feels simultaneously daunting and liberating. Nonetheless, this is going to be a lot of fun. Hopefully, it’s a lot of fun for people besides me and my three friends who read the first two paragraphs of every other post. If you’d like to support me and my endeavors, I’d immensely appreciate your subscription. So, go ahead and SMASH that like button on my Sum 41 guitar cover (I think it’s somewhere on the dark web) and subscribe to my newsletter!
