GLCB Men's Study Group - Ten Commandments - Week 2
Good evening men,
What a wonderful time we had Sunday evening! I know I thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship and the study, made so much sweeter by so many of you being willing to share your thoughts. I was edified indeed.
This coming Sunday, we will focus our attention on the 2nd of the Ten Commandments:
“You shall not make for yourself an idol.”
Here are some questions to ponder in preparation for our meeting:
- What is an “idol?”
- Must an idol be a physical, tangible “thing?”
- Are there any idols in my life?
Consider the following quotes about idolatry as you think about these things this week:
The essence of idolatry is the entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him.
~ A.W. Tozer
You don’t have to go to heathen lands today to find false gods. America is full of them. Whatever you love more than God is your idol.
~ D.L. Moody
Every one of us is, even from his mother’s womb, a master craftsman of idols.
~ Calvin
An idol of the mind is as offensive to God as an idol of the hand.
~ Tozer
I would neither have you be idle in duties - nor make an idol of duties.
~ William Secker
…the greatest enemy that confronts us in the spiritual life is the worshipping of idols. The greatest danger confronting us all is not a matter of deeds or of actions, but of idolatry…
~ Lloyd-Jones
Finally, if you can spare 54 minutes, I encourage you to listen to this sermon from the late Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones entitled “The Message of the Bible Today”, in which the good Doctor explains that “our greatest need is to live in right relationship with God and this is accomplished because our sins were punished in Christ. Lloyd-Jones asks, ‘has the law of God brought you to Christ?’”
Have a great rest of the week, and we’ll see you Sunday!
