Ecclesiastes Chapter 2 Study
Good morning, Ladies!
It's not too early to begin preparing for this coming week's study of Ecclesiastes chapter 2: as with chapter 1, begin reading it every day, asking the Lord to show you what He would have you learn from the verses. Here are some of the study questions we'll discuss on Sunday evening:
What are some of the ridiculous things Solomon examined in his search for meaning? Why do you think he tried so many different approaches to find the purpose for existence?
Choose one verse or phrase from Ecclesiastes 2 that stands out to you. It could be something that you're intrigued by, something that makes you uncomfortable, something that puzzles you, something that resonates with you, or just something that you want to examine further.
How did Solomon respond to his test of "enjoyment?" Why is it significant that Solomon did not see God as a "celestial spoilsport?" How does that compare with the way many Christians (and non-Christians!) view the Christian life? In what ways was Solomon "on to something" in his exploration of enjoyment as a path to meaning?
What makes the pursuit of pleasure a selfish act? In what ways is it incomplete? What is the difference between temporary pleasure and true pleasure?
Why do people often quote the "eat, drink, and be merry" verse as a life motto? What does it mean that the blessings we experience are from God? How does that change our views about enjoying life? How can the phrase be reframed to celebrate God's provision? Rewrite it with that view in mind.
What are some of the more ridiculous things you've done to find meaning and purpose in life? What led to those choices? What was the result of those pursuits? How do you view those now, upon reflection?
What are some things in your life that lead you to think about big questions like what life means and what really matters? What prompts contemplation about the end of life? What does this tell you about your faith life? About your current relationship with God?
Don't be afraid to think long and deeply about these things!! Allow the Holy Spirit to not only probe your heart, but engage your mind - He wants to make you more like Christ!
