Ecclesiastes 4 & 5 Study questions

Hello church family!

We trust the study of Ecclesiastes is helping you to look at life a little differently - maybe a lot differently - helping you to have an eternal perspective on all things. That's our prayer.

Study Questions for Chapters 4 & 5 of Ecclesiastes:

  • Choose one verse or phrase from Ecclesiastes 4 & 5 that stands out to you. It could be something you're intrigued by, something that makes you uncomfortable, something that puzzles you, something that resonates with you, or just something that you want to examine further.

  • What did Solomon observe in Ecclesiastes 4:1? How did this affect his examination of the meaning of life (outside of Christ)?

  • From Ecclesiastes 4:4-6, what did Solomon learn from observing the industrious man and the lazy man?

  • Review Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. What do these verses teach us about the importance of community? Of friendship? Marriage?

  • Study Ecclesiastes 5:2-7, and consider it in light of prayer. Read Psalm 141:1-2, Matthew 6:7, and Matthew 12:34-37. How do these verses relate to Solomon's observations in Ecc 5:2-7?

  • What myths does Solomon destroy in Ecclesiastes 5:10-20? How do these myths appear in modern society? How does believing these myths rob people of God's blessings?

Alistair Begg:

All Those Lonely People - Archive - Truth For Life

Countless people are desperately groping for meaning as they go through life, becoming ever more dissatisfied, lonely, and restless. How does one find hope and meaning in today’s world? Alistair Begg teaches that true satisfaction can be found only in Jesus Christ. He is a friend to the friendless, peace for the weary, and a Savior for sinners.

Concerning Worship - Archive - Truth For Life

Just as the family makes the house a home, so it is that God’s gathered people create a special place for worship. Believers are to actively participate in the local church by attendance, tithing, and by adding their voices in worship. Alistair Begg teaches us that when we are awed by God’s mercy and forgiveness, it leads us to want to please God in all things, including genuine worship.

The Meaninglessness of Mechanical Worship - Archive - Truth For Life

Does what we do on Saturday night affect our worship on Sunday morning? According to the writer of Ecclesiastes, it does. Alistair Begg explains that we should guard our steps and prepare our hearts before we worship. If we are not careful, worship can become a meaningless routine in which we sing hymns and read Scripture without truly praising the Lord.

Money — Dangers, Disappoint, Delights - Archive - Truth For Life

While searching for the meaning of life, the Teacher in Ecclesiastes discovered that wealth brought burdens and anxiety rather than satisfaction. He asked what benefit money might afford, or what advantage it offered. His conclusion? Not much!—until, that is, we acknowledge that all good gifts, and our ability to enjoy them, come from God. Alistair Begg teaches that for believers, the best life is yet to come. In the meantime, living in Christ changes the source of our hope and increases enjoyment of even a simple life.
