Greetings everyone!
First up, I reviewed No Place for Bravery for Paste. It's a predictable homage, so I get self-indulgent thinking about criticism of small(ish) titles and getting out or around your influences.
The Safe Room, the game club podcast I host with my friend Rose, returned with Silent Hill 3. The episode came out in October, but we recorded in September so I'm counting it! It's a very cool game and we have a pretty sprawling discussion about it.
And that's it! A slow month as sometimes happens in freelancing and in writing generally. However, I'm kicking around some exciting pitches. On the Patreon side, I'm working on an essay about the rhythm RPG Everhood as well as something about the queer cinema classic Mädchen in Uniform for this month. Those will be up on the blog as soon as they are ready.
Fortunately, there's a lot of good stuff out there and I've listed some of the stuff I enjoyed in September below.
Cutting through a truly noxious discourse, Angelica Jade Bastian wrote a discerning analysis of Ana De Armas' performance in Blonde. It's a good read, whether you or not you are interested in the film, and it's very much appreciated how much it moves above and beyond hot takes and surface reads, while still being unafraid and cutting.
Bulletpoints ran an issue about recent The Last of Us remake. It's worth reading! The emphasis on The Last of Us Part I as a new and distinct object from the original gets a lot of interesting work here.
My friend Lotus wrote a piece about Norco. Their first games essay in two years. Lotus' influence on my writing cannot be overstated and they are also a dear friend, so check this out!
Here, fellow critic Madeline Blondeau hops across genres and types of criticism, dancing between rhythm games and flash fiction.
Finally, in a lighter mood, here's my friend Jack reviewing the offerings of a Memphis snowcone place. It's a very funny video. Jack is very funny.
